One important thing I learned about romantic period music through my presentation was that the music can tell a specific story or describe a scene. For example, the William Tell Overture (the piece I researched about) tells the story of a Swiss legend. Rossini also paints different scenes such as the calm "Dawn" at the beginning, the violent "Storm," the peaceful "Call to the Cows" after the storm has passed, and finally, the exciting "March of the Swiss Soldiers." This taught me that Romantic composers wanted to make the audience imagine specific things. I also learnt that Romantic composers used dramatic contrast and a large orchestra in order to express big emotions. The piece goes from being incredibly quiet and still at the beginning with just the cellos to incredibly loud and chaotic during the storm, with the entire orchestra, cymbals, and drums creating terror. I learnt that it was important for music at that period to have contrast to express different moods to make the piece interesting.

In my opinion, Romantic period music is much more interesting than the music from earlier periods because it tells clear stories. For example, when I listened to the William Tell Overture, I could almost imagine the scenes and could feel the calm of the dawn, the terror of the storm, and the excitement of the finale.
