June of 1898, the U.S. sent the a ship ¨Charleston¨ to invade Guam. The ship arrived at the island and the Americans sent warning signals to let the Spanish know they were there. Guam didn't really respond to these signals. Within a few hours, a Spanish boat sailed over to talk with the Americans. The Spanish apologized for not responding to the Americans because they thought it was a greeting not an act of war.
