Birth control has been around as long as "3000 BCE", when condoms were developed from "fish bladders" (OBOS, 2013).
Ever since, it has continued to develop. In 1960, the "first oral contraceptive" was developed, now known as the birth control pill (OBOS, 2013). In 1972, birth control was legalized for unmarried women. It has been legal since. In 2006, the Plan B, "emergency contraceptive", was approved (OBOS, 2013). It has continued to developed since.

Controversial Elements Regarding the Use of Birth Control

One reason people claim to the use of birth control is for religion purposes. In some religions, this may be considered a way to prevent a human life from living. The issue with this is that there is science to back up why birth control is used to prevent and not end a life. Also, so many people practice different religions, and this is ultimately why it is legal as a country in the USA.
Another reason that birth control is controversial is because contraception can carry health risks. Thankfully, millions of women are on birth control and these contraceptive methods have been proven safe and effective, which is also why anyone outside of the woman taking it and her doctor does NOT have a say.

Laws Related to Birth Control Use and How William Baird Contributed to This

William (Bill) Baird is recognized as the person who advocated for the legalization of birth control in the United States. The supreme court case known as "Baird v. Eisenstadt" legalized birth control on March 22nd, 1972 (UMass EDU). Before Baird helped legalize birth control, he was arrested "eight times" while advocating for birth control and abortion (UMass EDU). Baird decided to protest for women's rights after a mother to eight died in his arms, while trying to give herself an abortion. Baird wanted to make birth control legal so women could prevent pregnancy if they chose to. He fought for women's rights and eventually led to the decision to legalize birth control in 1972.

There are so many uses to birth control, and so many women depend on it for MANY reasons. The legalization allows women safe and effective methods to prevent pregnancy, help health conditions, and much more.
