In 1965, a group of students in Des Moines decided to wear black armbands and fast on December 16 and New Year's. This was their way of protesting the Vietnam War and supporting a truce. The school principals eventually heard about the plan and created a policy stating that any student wearing an armband would be told to remove it, and refusal to do so will result in a suspension. One day, Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt wore their armbands to school and were sent home. The next day, John Tinker did the same with the same result. The students did not return to school until after New Year's Day, the planned end of the protest.

(Facts and Case Summary - Tinker V. Des Moines, n.d.)

The students affected by this had appealed the ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit but lost. They eventually took the case to the Supreme Court of the United States. The Supreme Court, with a 7-2 majority decided that "the armbands represented pure speech that is entirely separate from the actions or conduct of those participating in it." The Court also stated that in order to justify the repression of free speech, school officials have to prove that the speech or content will "materially and substantially interfere" with the operation of the school.

The Tinker V. Des Moines case was no doubt a historic case for the United States Supreme Court case in 1969.
The main topic surrounding the First Amendment rights of students in public schools.
The most important elements are whether or not students could express political opinions through symbolic speech and whether or not students lose their First Amendment rights when they enter a school.
It is still relevant today because it established the idea that schools cannot censor or punish students for expressing their political views, as long as there is no distraction to the educational environment.
This case has important implications for today's classrooms because it protects students and their right to free speech and expression. It also means that students have the right to wear whatever clothes or accessories as long as it does not violate school dress codes.
