- ¨Appealing to the less traditional youth of the 90’s, Friends established itself as an innovative series early on in its airing. With this, the show was one of the first to incorporate gay and lesbian characters into the recurring cast. With that being said, having LGBTQ+ representation does not mean it was done accurately or with minority interest: exemplified in the characters of Carol, Susan, and Chandler’s Dad, Friends affirms itself as a story of privilege in its reinforcement of heteropatriarchal norms and stereotypes.¨ (written by Marissa de Boer in

Gay and Lesbian Representation Amidst the Heteropatriarchy in “Friends”)

- ¨She didn’t win the election and we have not yet seen the first female president, but Hillary Clinton’s legacy is still strong and extremely important. Hillary made history the moment that she won the Democratic Party nomination for president, and that will not soon be forgotten.

In the past, women have made strides in politics and have slowly but surely gotten us to where we are today. Hillary Clinton winning a major party nomination, though, is the biggest step women have taken in politics in a long time (arguably ever) and it opened a lot of doors for the women of the future.¨ (written Kate Harveston in How Hillary Changed Politics for Women)

5 Facts About Heteropatriarchy

1. In ancient Greece, heteropatriarchy were valued throughout times of war. Leading to a system that grew into a society denying women rights and that they were dehumanized.

2. In a heteropatriarchy, it is commonly understood that men hold the highest positions of power in society. On the other hand, women and non-binary people have to experience the bulk of social oppression.
3. One of the main foundations of heteropatriarchy is the normalization of the "nuclear family". This type of family (men being in charge always out at work, having a loving housewife with no job, send the kids to school ad come home to study) is the only acceptable family form, manifesting this societal system into modern day.
4. Not every aspect of life in the United States may be inherently sexist and based off of the nuclear family, but everything is greatly affected by the fact that men hold most of the power in one's home, job, and social class. For example such jobs and things like, business, economics, music, architecture, body image, and even fashion.
5. Lastly, the term “sexism” didn’t exist until after the 1950’s. Funny enough, one of the decades that we typically consider to be the most characterized by sexism, with the help of heteropatriarchy norms started since ancient Greece, was well noted long before that.
