The Diary

She feels the freedom and pleasure she felt when she was a child, by writing a private diary. She arrives in Rome with her family but she can't get into the house because most people fled from the city to avoid the heat. No one was there to help them and she felt disoriented. So she started to write a diary for herself in Italian as an act of rebellion. When she writes in Italian, she no longer "hears English in her brain." She sees the deprivation because it's a bad Italian but at the same time, she feels "free, light." When she writes in Italian, she doesn't "recognize the person who is writing" the diary because it is different, a very personal and private part of herself. Therefore, writing a personal diary in Italian allows her to have freedom and pleasure because imperfection is allowed in her diary.

And “fumble” is closer to the state of doing things clumsily. This depends on the translators’ understanding of the author’s struggles in using Italian. The translator of the original book chose “grope” because he thought the image of “groping in the dark” was more vivid after communicating with the author.

As for the second difference, for the Italian original, this is a word closer to "semi-illierate". The emphasis on semi-literate or illiterate may be related to a positive or negative assessment of the author's linguistic status.
