A few days before Christmas, my dad and I would take my little sled (when there was snow on the ground) and walk back into our woods to find a cedar tree. This was on our farm near Fritchton, which is a very small town about six miles east of Vincennes.
When we had located the right size tree (volunteer of course), Daddy would chop it down; and we would load it on the sled. We would then walk back to the farmhouse where my mother and I would decorate the tree. I have very fond memories of this childhood Christmas custom.

Norma Jean Bosworth
11-21-2020

HIDE THE REINDOG
My siblings and I called this a "Reindog"- Mom won it as low prize at Bridge Club. We used to annoy Mom by hiding it on the Christmas tree. She'd find it, complain and store it away. So we find it again. and the game continued. Years later, whomever had it at the end of the Season would store the Reindog, until they could hide it on someone else’s tree.

Making Memories

Our excitement builds for the Christmas season when we get our Christmas tree. This year we got our biggest one yet and had so much fun decorating it. Our van still smells like a Frasier fir! It is our tradition to drive around and look at holiday lights—the kids enjoy taking turns selecting songs while we drive. It is quite an eclectic mix with our crew. The kids get excited for our R2-D2 advent calendar and I get a little creative at creating activities to fill our days. One of my favorite traditions is their school Christmas concert. We are missing it this year but hoping it makes next year’s even more special. I don’t know what memories my children will keep as they grow, but I’m hopeful they remember the love, joy, and awe they have for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
The Perfect Christmas Morning

In Chicago, the name of the church I grew up in was “Little White Church”; very fitting as it was literally a little white church building. From the outside it looked like it belonged on the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Inside, it was cozy with high ceilings, beautiful wood trim, and remarkable stained glass. Every year we had a Christmas Eve service at 11 pm. It didn’t matter your age or the distance you drove, you showed up. The sanctuary was always dimly lit, but full of excitement. We would sing and worship together. There’s something quite magical about ending every Christmas Eve service in candlelight, singing “Silent Night”, and knowing that as we all headed home Christmas had in fact come. For me, there is no more perfect way to start Christmas morning than the still, dark, early morning hours, and everyone’s heads and hearts focused on the gift and joy of Jesus’ birth.
