Call to Adventure

My call to adventure was when I graduated from San Elijo Middle school, and heard that I would be attending San Marcos High school. In a call to adventure, the hero gets the news of their first quest, where it is going to take place, and what they will be doing. I experienced this when I too got my first quest that I would be attending San Marcos High School as a student trying to succeed.

Crossing the Threshold

I crossed the threshold on the first day of school when I took my first step in San Marcos High as an official student. When a hero crosses the threshold, they go from their mudane world to their new world where their quest will be taking place. I crossed from the old mudane world of a middle schooler into the new world as a high schooler where my quest would take place.

Abyss

My abyss during my Hero's Journey, was finals week. In a hero's journey, the abyss is the negative part of their quest, where they are either in trouble, or have been defeated. Finals week to me was the negative abyss because it was a stressful week and I had to put a lot of time into studying.

Gift from the Gods/Goddesses

I received a gift from the gods or goddesses when after finals week, came winter break. This winter break was given to me by the teachers and staff at my school. When a hero receieves a gift, its usually from their mentor, or a god or goddess. This gift is given towards the end of their quest and is usually a good gift. Towards the end of my quest of my first semester, I received a good gift which was winter break. This gift was given to me by my mentors, gods, and goddesses: the staff at San Marcos High.

Katniss Everdeen: Call to Adventure

For my hero, I am choosing Katniss Everdeen from the book and movie the Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games, Katniss' call to adventure happens when she volunteers to compete in the Hunger Games instead of her little sister Prim. This is where the adventure starts. A call to adventure is the start of the hero's journey. This is when the hero and the viewer of the movie know what the hero's quest is going to be about. When Katniss volunteers for Prim, this starts out Katniss' quest in the movie and the beginning of Katniss' fight in the Hunger Games, just like a call to adventure.

Crossing the Threshold

In the Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen crosses the threshold when she crosses in a train from her mudane home District 12 to the Capital where the Hunger Games will take place. In a typical hero's journey, the hero crosses over from their normal known mudane world, to the their new unknown world where their quest will be taking place. Katniss Everdeen crosses over the threshold when she leaves her mudane world to go participate in the Hunger Games at the Capital.

Abyss

The abyss in the Hunger Games during Katniss' quest would have to be when one of her only friends her in the games Rue dies. Rue was like a little sister to Katniss. Rue reminded Katniss of her sister Prim who originally got picked to go to the Hunger Games, but Katniss volunteered and took her place. The abyss in the hero's journey, is when the hero faces tragedy during their quest. Rue's death is Katniss' abyss, because Rue was one of the only things Katniss enjoyed while being in the games. This even was a real tradgey for Katniss and was her abyss.

Gift from God/Goddesses

In the Hunger Games, Katniss receievs a gift from one of the mysterious characters. One of the characters Madge, gives Katniss a gold mockingjay pin as she is leaving to go to the Capital to participate in the Hunger Games. When a hero gets a gift in a typical hero's journey this gift stays with them throughtout their quest, and this gift is usually brought back to their mudane world. This gift often symbolizes a certain message that is found throughout the movie or book. The mockingjay pin symbolizes rebellion, and is later used in the rebellion in the second movie and book. When Katniss receieves this pin, she wears it while she is in the Hunger Games, and eventually brings in back to District 12 with her.
