In my Daddy's Arms I am Tall African Americans Celebrating Fathers by Javaka Steptoe

In my Daddy’s Arms is a collection of poems depicting the different aspects of being an African American father. This book is especially good for students in third grade. In my classroom, I would have students create poems about their own fathers in order to compare and contrast different cultures, as well as different characteristics that fathers can have. This book also shows different family structures. For example, one poem states, "Nobody has a granddaddy like my granddaddy. I'm so lucky that he's my one and only Daddy" (Steptoe, 1998). Another activity that I would have students do is create their family tree, so they could see first hand from their classmates that families can have different dynamics. This is an important book for elementary students to be exposed to in order to learn about African American culture, as well as family dynamics.

Mary Guy by Kilty Binger

Mary Guy is about a Caribbean woman who sings a funny song all the time even though it is against the law to have this sort of fun. The governor puts Mary Guy in jail because of her noise, but Mary Guy then tricks the governor into getting into the jail. Mary Guy then creates new laws where everyone is able to sing and dance, and the governor realizes his foolishness in prohibiting these laws and decides to join them in the fun. Mary Guy would be a good book for 2nd graders. One fun activity that I could see my future students completing would be creating their own funny song. Another activity that I would want my students to complete is create a drawing of themselves in a jail and how they would escape from the jail. I think this book is extremely important for elementary students to read because it has to do with the Caribbean culture, which is a very interesting culture to learn about.

Saltypie A Choctaw Journey from Darkness into Light by Tim Tingle

Saltypie is about an Indian’s family’s move from Oklahoma Choctaw country to Pasadena, TX. The little boy narrates the book and he listens to his grandmother tell the story of her life. This book would be a good book for third graders. Two activities that elementary students could do for this book is to ask their grandmother about her childhood and to create a poster of her life story. Another project they could do would be to find out their heritage and to create a family tree based off of that. This book could instill a lot of empathy in students, as well as teaching them about the hardships of Native American culture.

Children of the Seed Gatherers by Mary Worthylake

Children of the Seed Gatherers is about the Indians who once lived in the great central valleys of California and Oregon and their quest for acorns. The book is more specially about two Indians, Kiho and Lema, and their way of life as acorn gatherers. This would be a good book for third graders to read. One activity that would be good for these students is to create a recipe of the different recipes for what they think the acorn mash and other acorn dishes are. Another activity that they can do is to create a dish out of "acorns" to bring into class! This is a really good book to teach children about Native American culture.

A Show of Hands Say It in Sign Language by Mary-Beth Sullivan and Linda Bourke

A Show of Hands Say It in Sign Language is a book about different scenarios and how to say given words in sign language. It also explains why learning sign language is so important, even if you are not deaf. This would be an appropriate book for any students grades 2-4. One activity that I would have my students do, after they read the book, would be to have a sign language spelling bee. Another activity that I would have them do is to try to perform a play only in sign language! I think this is a very important book for individuals to learn about individuals with hearing impairment as well as sign language, since 7 out of every 100 Americans have one.

Grace for President is a book about a girl, Grace, who decides to run for their class president, even though she is facing opposition since there has never been a girl president. The book is about Grace’s race against her classmate, Thomas. Grace ends up winning. This is an appropriate book for second grade students. One activity that I would have my students to is to create a fake election so they could understand the electoral college. Another activity that I would have them do is figure out how many votes each state actually has and create a poster that depicts the number of votes. This book shows gender equality, as well as showing different different ethnicities throughout the book.

Hi! My name is Liz Leverone and I am a first grade teacher at Joyce M. Bullock Elementary School. I chose to have my students read these books this semester in order to get a full grasp of different diverse groups of people are cultures. In this book collection I have included Black culture, Native American culture, disabilities, gender equality, and other cultures that are outside the United States. I think it is important for my students to get a holistic view on different cultures, because it is so important for students to become more productive members of society!

Not My Girl is about a girl, Olemaun, who returns to her Inuit family, after being away at the outsiders’ school for two years. The book is about Olemaun readjusting back to the Inuit way of life. This book is appropriate for third graders. One project that I could have my students do is to do a report on the Inuit culture and to present it to the class. After that project, I would have the class go through the book and see if they could explain different aspects of the Inuit culture that are in the book in a group. I think this book is very important for elementary students to learn about because it is such a different culture than the one they are from.

The Spirit of the Maasai Man by Laura Berkeley

The Spirit of the Maasai Man is about how the Maasai Man makes all of the zoo animals free by his songs. The Maasai Man is the spirit that lives inside of everyone. This book would be appropriate for second graders. One fun activity that these students could do is choose one animal to "free" through the Maasai Man and write a paper on what song that animal would sing once they were free. I think this would be a good book for students to read so they are able to experience a different culture that is essentially a 180 from their own, as well as a different spiritual experience.
