Also if anything goes wrong they should have a back up plan.
Area: Is the venue suitable for certain types of music performances, for example: the spacing in the room and how the acoustics are. Also the artist needs to be comfortable with the space given.
Good security/staff: The staff in the venue need to be well trained to backup checks are needed and interviews would be necessary so you know the staff on the day meet your standards.
