We created a piece of Jazz music based on the simple three chord ostinati: D C#m Bm. This was done because; it is very common in Jazz to create a repeated part for an instrument to ornate over the top (Usually would be improvised). The drums used brushes and played pianissimo with a shuffle like pattern. This kind of playing was seen by artists such as Miles Davis; a huge part of the Jazz movement in the 50s. I played an ostinati based around the chords previously provided. This included variating passing notes using staccato rhythms. This was because, in Jazz it was usual to escape the 'Normal' way of playing an instrument and introduce different rhythms or ornamentation. The guitar played the chords with intricate ornaments over while using the key. While the piece remains fairly diatonic, the guitar plays chromatic notes in certain parts of the song; which is due to the fact, chromaticism's are very common within the genre. The lyrics are along the lines of telling a story which lies in Jazz's roots of blues so reflects upon the genre well. There are many contrasting dynamics in the general piece from pp to f; this is down to the genre requesting large range of dynamics from its players. We created a piece of Classic Rock music. It was built with the key of A and was diatonic like with most rock band. The chords used are: A E D A but are used in more of a riff sense. Quite symbolic of an AC/DC song and so shows the definite genre. The chorus chords are D C A - Upon returning to the A it sounds rooted further defining the key. The bass was fairly straight with passing notes and the odd hammer on and pull off. This was because, rock is fairly simplistic. The drums play straight 4/4 and have change of dynamics from the verse being piano to forte in the chorus. Also the chorus uses the bell of the ride to replicate the use of cowbell. Many rock bands used the bell, to name a few: Guns N' Roses, Twisted Sister, Van Halen etc. The guitar uses heavy distortion and gain to get the 'Classic Rock' sound (High treble sound). It then plays the chords as power chords which was a very common thing to play in rock. There is a breakdown at the end of the song in double time. The guitars play triplets reminiscent of what would be heard from an Iron Maiden song; making it sound like horses stampeding. The lyrics were in the style of telling a story like blues music. This is because, rock was rooted to blues and stemmed from that and so the component came into the rock era after the development from blues. Overall the piece was good as it incorporated all the right parts from the genre but could have been improved with some backing vocal harmonies. We created a hip hop piece of music using all the instruments to sound like samples looped under the vocals. This is because, this was the basis for many hip-hop songs. On bass I played the root notes of the chords from the guitar with passing notes and hammer ons and pull offs. I did this as an ostinati. Also the notes were in time with what the drums were playing to reinforce the beat. This was because, the beat was one of the key components to form a hip-hop song. The drums played a fairly simple beat in 4/4 with the classic lifting of the hi-hat sound after every 2 bars; the drums carried the song and was able to define it to the genre. The vocals over the music was done as a rap which was incorporated because; the majority of hip-hop songs were rapped and so showed clearly the link to the genre. We created a song using the post punk/pop genre. This has bands like Sum 41 and Green Day to it's name. The song starts off piano with just the guitars and gradually builds. The vocals over the verse are soft to match the dynamic and all in all is reminiscent of the genre having the extreme dynamics. The chords used were Em D C D. The bass muddled round the chords with chromatic notes and diatonic passing notes. This was done because, in the genre it was commonly seen for the bass to go strolling along the fret board randomly. The drums played 4/4 straight beat underneath all of this. When the chorus hits the vocals turn into half scream which was a common feature of the genre. The chorus also entwined backing vocals doing 'Ohhs' using the melody of the chords - G D/F# Em. The lyrics used were quite rebellious and about a sad topic. This was because, in the genre many artists would also do this as it was their way of channeling the sad emotions out. It has a breakdown where it is quite heavy; further defining the extreme dynamics. Vocals become slightly harsher and almost 'introduce' the guitar solo with the melody flowing into it.
