Sandy's students were sitting in small groups enthusiastically cutting up cards that name different non-fiction text features and when asked they said, "We're learning about chronological order" and pointed to the board that helped them know what to do. Great job creating a collaborative space for students, Sandy!

Fifth graders were working independently to make inferences about character traits of the main character in a shared text. They were also identifying supporting text evidence to support these inferences. Jennie had structured the activity with very clear expectations, sentence stems and examples, a list of character traits, etc. She provided accommodations and ongoing feedback to support students. She also set clear expectations about work completion.

Ashley DeRoy and Caroline Johnson strategically paired students to read a nonfiction text while they also conferred with students 1:1 or 1:2. All students were engaged in comprehending the text, asking questions, and sharing knowledge and understanding.

Jenn supported her students in monitoring for meaning when reading a narrative passage. Since the passage was a cold read, and some of them admitted they were not readily visualizing, she got them to recognize that they needed to re-read to be able to visualize and understand. They re-read and strengthened their understanding.

Lena Jessup gets her students excited about reading, while following the Iditarod sled dog races in Alaska. Her students not only are inspired to "read as a sled dog runs" per the sign posted at her door, but some geography as well. They learn about Alaska and the perseverance it takes to complete over 1000 miles of the dog race. As her neighbor, I love listening to her share the experience every year, and get new mushers.

Innovation Lab Coding!

I visited the innovation lab today and saw Mr. Dooher's class working on coding. I was so impressed by how engaged the students were in the lesson. One student showed the class how to change the coding sequence while it was projected on the screen. He was able to change the speed and orientation of his lion while he was presenting! Mrs. Dowling Leaps into action

Mrs. Dowlings class made leaps and bounds reading their data from their frog jumps! Students were using the clues in the graphs to figure out what the graph meant and working with each other to interpret the results! Way to go little leapers!

I popped in to deliver some mail and noticed her class was engaged in a reading activity. They all seemed busy and productive. I dropped off my mail and continued on. THEN, I popped back in because I wanted to see and hear more about what the students were doing. I sat with a small group and they shared how the reading conversation cards work and that this week was a discussion about the book group books and next week would be writing. The group was knowledgeable and knew what the expectations were. A neat little classroom activity! Thanks Mrs. Sullivan.

At Monday morning arrival, Ashley was waiting in the hallway for her students. She made a point to greet each of them individually as they arrived and got ready for their day. This set a positive and welcoming tone for the week, and the students seemed happy to be at school!

Mrs. Dowling always has an innovative way of thinking! Instead of using Skittles (the candy) for a math activity, she got the class multicolor pony beads. The students each got a cup of assorted colors and used the beads to complete a math activity. This hands on work really got the students excited about math!

Ms. Cassidy's class was doing a wonderful job working in small groups discussing their books that they are reading together. Ms. Cassidy and I discussed how it took them some time to get to this point, but it was clear to me she has taught them the system and their routine was in place! They knew the expectations and were completely engaged! Flexible seating for the win! ;)

I briefly popped into Mrs. Chung's class while she was instructing a small group in math on the rug. She had another small group going with Mrs. O'Brien. All other students were actively working independently and on task & engaged! It's great to see students getting this small group instruction!

I appreciate the many times Alicia shares instructional resources in math or reading with her peers. Her suggestions are often with detailed instructions and user friendly. Even when asked privately, she takes the time to forward links and other resources to help others. I've been using a reading comprehension resource she sent me that works well with the Wilson reading system I use. My students enjoy it as well. Thanks you Mrs. Gelmini.

Students were learning about form on the rug - Mrs. DeBor thoughtfully modeled the next task for them, and they were going to get their sketchbooks to practice drawing different forms!
