Students can provide input and tell the class about whatever they feel necessary. This helps build a community and family-like feel in the classroom.
Advantages: 
  • Some students may not have that family at home so giving them the support at school can make them feel comfort.
  • Helps students regulate their emotions before the day starts.
  • Puts the students in the tone they need to be in to foster their best learning.
Disadvantages: 
  • Takes about 20-30 minutes for a thorough meeting. 
  • May take time away from other things needing to get done.
Scaffolding for ELL: If there is an ELL student in your classroom, writing down the key points that you will be mentioning on paper will help them follow along with the rest of the class. Always encourage them to share and take wait time so they get the chance to try and understand.

They become an expert by meeting with a group and each person gets assigned a topic. All of the students from the different groups that have the same topic meet and research it together. After that, they all go back to their original group and share what they have learned.
Advantages:
  • Having each student responsible for knowing and learning something dedicates them to research.
  • Students are responsible for their own learning AND for teaching their group.
  • Helps build comprehension.
  • Improves listening.
Disadvantages:
  • Time consuming.
  • Students might have anxiety to share with group.
  • Students might have found information that is incorrect.
Scaffolding for ELL: Make 
sure students have participated in small group learning and know what is happening.  Use a graphic organizer to organize the information that makes sense to the student.  Rephrase questions when there seems to be confusion.

These statements are in relation to a text.
Advantages:
  • Keeps students interested.
  • Teaches how to make predictions.
  • Builds curiosity about a specific topic.
Disadvantages:
  • Students might be discouraged if they predict incorrectly.
Scaffolding for ELL:
These guides can be completed orally, if that is how the specific student understands best.

  • Working with a peer, someone may be doing all of the work.
Scaffold for ELL:
Write out the main points instead of just talking about them, give student text in their native language.

  • Some students may not like being "in charge"
  • Time consuming.

Have students write out questions they may have.  Pair students in a way that will benefit the ELL.

Disadvantages:
  • Students who may be a low reading level could get discouraged.

Vary the difficulty of the prompts.  Let students listen to book via recording or having someone read it to them.

  • Emphasizes different viewpoints.
  •  Responding to prompts.
Disadvantages:
  • Students may not want to give their opinion. 
  • Students may not like the prompt given.

Orally discuss the prompt and the assignment beforehand.

Have deep consideration of the student's abilities. Three other activities that are beneficial for ELLS are Daily News, dialogue journals, persuasive essays.

Disadvantages:
Some students writing skills may not be developed enough for this.
Some students may be rude or inappropriate with their reasoning.
Scaffold for ELL:
Work in small groups, talk about a topic that may be passionate for them.

  • Promotes fluency.

  • Builds confidence and comfortability with reading out loud.
Disadvantages:
  • Students may have anxiety when it comes to reading aloud.
  • If students don't get enough time to practice they may not do well, then be discouraged about reading aloud.
Scaffold for ELL:
Be conscious of who gets what part in the script.  Give student with ELL more time to practice and reread their part.
