In my near future, I want to become a principal or an athletic director. I want this career because I have a true passion for being a leader and setting positive examples to students and the community. Preferably, I would like to work in the secondary age level.

5 Legal Issues According to a Professional

I met with Brad Morgan, principal at Tolar High School and asked what the top 5 legal issues were that he faces as a principal.

#1 Parent communication is something a principal has to deal with every day. Some parents might get really upset and provoke legal matters when a principal does not communicate effectively over their child's educational matters.

#2 Disciplinary actions are another issue that principals face every day. Making sure these actions are documented in great detail are of high importance in order to reduce any legal matters

#3 Duties at athletic events are not something most people think administrators do. However, administration must be present at all home athletic events, in order to assure safety and enforce rules. Keeping students and fans in line is vital to eliminating any legal issues with police, game officials, and schools.

#4 Special education services are very important to ensure that all students get the education they deserve with the accommodations they need. Correct documentation of these accommodations are of great deal in order to eliminate legal matters with school district, state, and parents.

#5 Formal observations and walkthroughs are something a principal does quite often. Making sure that teachers and staff are effective can help reduce legal matters with student test scores and performances.

After reviewing the NASET website, I discovered a huge concept that resides in schools each day, FERPA. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act provides students and their families with privacy from others. Not just anyone can see any child's educational records because of this act.

Another important concept I discovered was the ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act. This provides student and staff with disabilities protection over being discriminated or not receiving correct accommodations in their working or learning environment.

After reviewing the NSBA website, I discovered an important law that is enforced in schools each day. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA, provides students with detailed accommodations that are to be provided to them in the educational setting.

Another important school law I discovered was the McKinney-Vento Act, which provides students who are considered homeless, access to any materials they should need throughout the school year in order to help them become successful.

The Mckinney-Vento Act is implemented to help students who face homelessness become successful. This act allows students to not have to mvoe around schools depending on where they are staying as well as have most of the same opportunities that children who are not homeless have.

I selected this topic because I had a lot of friends who were considered homeless as I was growing up. These friends would sleep on couch to couch and I can't imagine the hardships they faced.

Summary of the McKinney-Vento Act

The McKinney-Vento Act gives students who are facing homelessness, the same chance as students who have homes. This is very important for schools to understand and implement so that all students have the chance to be successful, as well as have the resources they need to be successful.

For example, allowing a student to play sports with provided transportation to destination, after the sport is over, is something that falls under the McKinney-Vento Act. Therefore, a homeless student would get the chance to participate just like all of the other housed peers. Personally, I have seen homelessness amongst my friends growing up, and I think their participation in sports or other extracurricular activities was their saving grace and contributed to their academic and personal success.
