As school started Student A began her day by playing with the computer, calculator, cameras, cell phones, and walkie- talkies. First, Student A came over wearing a police hat, she stated, "I am a detective and today Student B and I are solving crimes." First, the student started to collect all the materials she needed in order to catch the criminals and make phone calls. Once, she had all the materials set out I would ask questions like, "What are you using the computer for?" and "Why do you need the camera?" Student A was able to explain why each material she chose was essential. Student A stated, "The camera is for taking pictures of the bad guys and the computer is to help find where the bad guys are." In addition, Student A mentioned, "The phones are to call when you see a bad guy," as she handed me a phone. She then brought out the walkie-talkies and demonstrated how to use the walkie-talkie. Lastly, Student A mentioned how Student B was sick and not able to help her catch the bad guys today.

Evidence of Math

As Student A started to gather the materials she needed for playing, I realized that she was categorizing. Student A chose from a wide variety of materials to use but only selected technology materials. In addition, the cell phone, computer, and calculator she brought out to play allowed her to become familiar with numbers. Finally, math was also integrated through play when Student A would choose the materials. When there were multiples of one toy Student A would also provide herself a toy and also give me a toy. I asked Student A, "How many phones, cameras and walkie-talkies are there?" and she answered, "There is one for you and one for me." I then asked, "So there is an even about for both of us?" and she replied by stating, "Yes, I have one and you have one."

Next Steps

After observing Student A's playing, I though of a variety of ways a teacher could proceed with this play and integrate math. For example, the teacher could simply ask the student open-ended questions. The teacher could ask, "I see you are playing with a calculator and calculators have numbers on them. Can you show me where the number ten is on the calculator?" In addition, the teacher could ask, "Do you recognize this symbol (points to +),?" "When do we use the plus sign?" Furthermore, the teacher could create clues to help capture the criminals for Student A. The teacher could disperse five clues around the room for Student A and once the student found the clue than she would need to solve a math problem in order to reveal the clue. This activity could be differentiated to the students' ability levels. For example, Student A may be able to answer the question that asks to find the number eight somewhere in the room, while another student may be able to answer, "What number comes after nineteen?" In addition, the clues can be hidden other shapes or patterns in the room. For example, the teacher could display a picture of a shape or pattern and the student would have to find that shape or pattern in the room in order to find the next clue. Furthermore, the teacher could also instruct to the student to do certain tasks in order to be given a clue. For example, the teacher may announce to go find two crayons and once the student shows the two crayons then another clue will be given. Lastly, the teacher may ask the student to describe the "bad guy" and have the student list physical characteristics, such as; height, weight, age, color of eyes, and color of hair.
