Standard 1- Promoting Child Development And Learning

Part 1- Guiding

Child development involves the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur from birth and concludes in adolescence. Childhood is divided into 3 stages of life which include early childhood, middle childhood and late childhood. Development is physical, intellectual, social, emotional and moral. Child development refers to the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur from birth to the beginning of adulthood. Development can is the process by which a child changes over time.

Child development is cognitive, social and emotional, speech and language, fine and gross motor. Children need psychological, including intellectual, and emotional. A child needs a stable and loving environment, a sense of belonging and identity, and age appropriate stimulation. A young child's environment should be a place of peace. A child should be able to talk to their teacher and the teacher should be open to the child.

Part 2- Evidence of Practice

It is my job as an educator to provide a stable, learning environment for my students. Maintaining a schedule will help with keeping the kids on track. Children need stability and should feel comfortable in their classrooms. Young children are like sponges. They soak up everything you do or say. It is important to be a role model to your student. Exhibiting the behavior and language you would want them to have. Having a curriculum that is catered toward the development of my students

Artifact #1
(Practicum Parent Introduction Letter)

Greetings!

My name is Ms. Jay Jay. I am currently a student majoring in Early Childhood Education. I will be a student teacher in your child’s class this spring. I am looking forward to working with Ms. Mary and am excited about getting to know each student. During this time, I will be dedicated to making your child’s time with me memorable, fun, and full of learning. I have 15 years of experience working with kids, infants to school-age. Being an educator was an easy choice for me because I am passionate about children reaching their full potential. Your child’s education and love for school is important to me. I will do all I can to help, encourage and do my part in making sure the class is a healthy learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Mary or myself. I am thankful for this opportunity to get to know your children!

Jay Jay

Artifact #2
Daily Schedule

Jalayna Maina

Daily Schedule

Math and Science ECCE2116

September 8, 2021

Pre- K Daily Schedule

8:00-8:30 Arrival/Breakfast, Unpack, Put away lunches

8:30-9:00 Morning Circle- Days of the week, weather

9:00-9:15 Bathroom

9:15-9:30 Music

9:30-10:00 Morning Recess

10:00-10:15 Wash hands/Bathroom

10:15-10:30 Morning Snack

10:30-11:00 Art

11:30-12:00 Free Play/ Centers

12:00-12:10 Wash Hands/Bathroom

12:10-12:30 Lunch, Put out mats for nap

12:30-2:30 Nap Time

2:30-2:40 Hand Wash/Bathroom, Prepare for snack

2:40-2:50 Afternoon Snack

2:50-3:20 Afternoon Recess

3:20-3:45 Table Activities.

Standard 3- Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to support young children and families

Part 1- Guiding

Assessment is the process of gathering information about a child. Observation and documentation are when you observe a child and document what you see. A teacher should plan educational activities that are at a level the child can understand. There are several forms of observation Anecdotal, running notes, time samples, and photographs. Technology can be used when observing a child by recording them. This helps when you want to go back and visually see what the child does or says.

Practicing responsible assessment is making sure to document what you see. Assessment could be an ongoing process or short-term, but it all needs to be documented. Assistive technology allows children with disabilities the opportunity to be in a regular classroom setting. A child who is hearing impaired could use a voice recorder to communicate with their teacher. I would involve my family with assessment by keeping open communication at all times. Sending parents updates and reports on how the child is doing in class. Community resources would be DECAL and GELDS (Bright From The Start).

Part 2- Evidence Of Practice

When doing curriculum you have to be flexible. Some children may not grasp things and it is imperative to adjust the curriculum as needed. When I've had a child that showed no interest I found something within the topic for them to understand. I have used a recorder to record assessments with children. When they are saying their alphabets etc. I had a preschool child in my class who was hearing impaired. Although he didn't have a total loss of hearing, I made sure he was always positioned in class where he could see my face and be able to read my lips.

Artifact #1

Child Observation-

Jalayna Maina

ECCE 1103

Ms. Dumke
December 10, 2020

Child Observation 3-5-Year-Old Child

I observed a little girl named “Bella”. Bella starts off on the carpet playing with a block. She

looked very reserved and nervous. She picked up the blocks and started to rub her eyes. There was a

little boy who was sitting beside her playing with blocks. Bella did not look at him or say anything to

him. She then stands up and runs over to some classmates with excitement. The classmates are making

“roar” sounds. Bella begins to say “roar” as well. That interaction did not last long. She came back to the

carpet, sits down, and grabs one single block. Bella gets up again and walks over to the children playing with

Legos. She begins to play with the Legos. She stops playing with the Legos and stands in the same spot

picking her nose and puts it in her mouth. Bella has not talked or engaged with any of the children

standing around here. She goes back to the carpet and stands with her finger in her mouth. A teacher

comes over to sit on the carpet, the child looks very timid. Almost as if she wanted to run away. In my

honest opinion, the child looked afraid of the teacher.

The teacher pulls out blocks, and tells Bella to “come to sit down”. Bella immediately smiles. She seems very

excited to play with her teacher. The teacher begins to ask Bella what color the toys are, and Bella replies with

the colors. The teacher gets up and leaves. Bella begins to play with her classmate on the carpet with blocks.

Bella sees another child on the carpet playing with a bin. Bella sits on the bin while the child is playing

with the bin. Bella walks over to the table with a different teacher who is with other children. She starts

to put together a puzzle. Her teacher asked what color, and Bella told her teacher it was a circle. The teacher

leaves, and Bella stays at the table with classmates and plays. Bella then moves to a different table with

another teacher to tell the teacher the sounds dinosaurs make.

I noticed as the observation progressed, Bella seemed to become more social. Not necessarily with

children but with teachers. Her verbal language was not a lot. Her Social/emotional development

was not delayed, but the child seemed to enjoy being by herself more than engaging with other

children. Her motor skills were adequate. Her fine motor was good because she picked up a lot of things

with her hands, and she also put a puzzle together. Bella loved being by herself. She engaged with other

children, although it was limited. I would help Bella engage more with her classmates. Find more

activities that she could be involved in with the group. I do not think Bella has any delays. She just seems

to be a child that is not social. I would allow her to be herself, but also encourage her to interact

with other children when possible.

References

Shannon Scott (Retrieved 2020) 3rd Observation Pt 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9tJBluH1Zw&t=1029s

Artifact #2
Creative Activity Planning

Jalayna Maina

Chattahoochee Technical College

ECCE 1113

Dr. Marilyn Thomas

March 20, 2021

Creative Activity Planning

In the video, I observed a child who was very quiet and reserved. She seemed to enjoy playing

by herself but engaged with other children when doing group activities. I would do a

collaborative feet painting project that allowed all the kids to paint together. I’d put a big piece

of butcher paper on the floor. I would use different colored paints to paint the feet of each child

and have them walk around on paper together “painting” with their feet. I feel like this project

would help the child I observed interact with her classmates. Although she seems to do well

playing by herself, she enjoyed being with other children. This activity would help her be more

open while being creative with her classmates.

Reference

Barbara Rucci (2015) Collaborative Painting With Kids

Shannon Scott(2018) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9tJBluH1Zw

Standard 6- Becoming A Professional

Part 1- Guiding

I am currently a student at Chattahoochee Technical College, graduating in May 2022. I worked in early childhood education for almost 15 years. I've taught infants-school-age. Although I am not currently working in the field. I plan to go back after graduating. My ethical standard will be to always treat my students as individuals. Remember they all come from different backgrounds and cultures. To value and understand them. To provide and secure learning environment for each of my students.

I'll continue learning by taking continuing education classes along with attending preschool seminars and conventions. I will stay up to date by reading and watching current videos about early childhood education. Specifically for Pre-Kindergarten which is the age group, I plan on working with. I will advocate for children by making sure all their needs are met, academically, physically, and socially. It is my responsibility as their teacher to make sure all my students have what they need at school.

Part 2- Evidence Of Practice

I have been a student for 2 years at Chattahoochee Technical College. Although I am not currently working, I've been doing my Practicum with a Pre-K class. I've learned a lot and will be implementing all the knowledge I've gained when I re-enter the ECCE field. I'm excited about re-entering the field and staying up to date with the latest technology and classes that will be offered. Technology is how things operate now so it is important to keep up to date.

Artifact #1
Classroom Technology

Lab #7

Jalayna Maina

ECCE1112

Dr. McKoy

November 27, 2020

List 3 classroom technology you use in your classroom or would use in a classroom.

                                   iPad, Laptops, Recorder

State the ages (1-8) of the children that are using classroom technology

                                   1st grade, Ages 6-7

Explain how the classroom technology are being used and why

In my 1st grade class, we will use iPads, Laptops and Recorders. The iPad will be used for the kids to practice writing. A stylus will be used as a pencil for the children to write their names, numbers, etc. They can also put on headphones to listen to books. Laptops will be used to play educational games. Math and science games will be the primary use of laptops. Recorders will be used during free time. They will be able to record one another while playing and interacting with their classmates. They’ll be able to playback the conversations they’ve had with their friends. They will also be able to practice how to leave a voicemail.

What are your views on teachers using classroom technology in curriculum and assessment?

I personally think technology in the classroom is vital. We live in a world where technology is a part of daily life. Kids being able to have access to current information in and outside the classroom is important. Technology will help better prepare children for the world. It can be found in just about everything we do in life. Apps like facetime, zoom, and WhatsApp help people stay together all over the world. A teacher being able to use technology in lesson planned and classroom activities benefits the children. Teachers can have easy access to information needed for their class. Technology helps teachers stay up to date in communication with parents.

Reference

School Of Online Education (2020) How Important Is Technology in Education?
