New Netherland becomes New York

The prosperity of this Dutch colony, New Netherland, did not go unnoticed. England said that they had a right to it. The Dutch gave it to them and King Charles gave it to his brother The Duke of York. Hence the now changed name New York. It was one of the fastest growing places in the colony.

Founding New Jersey

The Duke of York decided to split up his colony giving the Hudson and Delaware rivers to Lord John Berkly and Sir George Cateret. They named their colony New Jersey after the English Channel island of Jeresey where Cateret had been born.

A Protestant group called the Quakers founded Pennsylvania. People from Sweden settled in the southern tip of Pennsylvania William Penn, their leader, let them stay and created the separate colony of Delaware.
