I wanted to report a comment made by a 6 year-old boy who described "zaplification" as "a kind of strong addition". I like this because it speaks to an experience of multiplication that we hope

Wishing I had the TouchTimes app with me Last Week!

I was working as a TOC in a grade 3/4 classroom last week and this worksheet was left for math. Prior to arriving at the school, I had no idea what grade I would be working with, otherwise I would have brought my iPad along. I wanted so much to be able to expose the children to the ideas that are in TT in addition to completing this sheet!! Now that I’m aware of a different approach to thinking about and seeing multiplication, it makes me want to provide this opportunity for students too - even if I’m only part of their life for a single day.

A Different Experience in Grade 3/4

I received another TOC call this past week that was in a grade 3/4 class. Fortunately the teacher had left a message stating the grade levels so I was able to bring my iPad along, just in case they were doing multiplication in math. The activity left for math involved skip counting by 3s. This allowed me to project TouchTimes onto the SmartBoard so that students could see a visual of what skip counting by 3s could look like. Each student had a chance to explore the app a little bit.

There was one student who was really struggling with the concept of multiplication itself. For this student, we had 3 pips and created additional pods that were multiples of 3. The physical manipulations and interactiveness of the app seemed to give him something to start with, that wasn’t just random guessing. Rather than adding 1 each time (3x1=4 for this child), he was beginning to “see” that we were working with groups of 3 as each additional pod could be created and seen on the screen. Again, I was only able to work with him for a very short period of time on one day but when he mentioned that he did more work than he usually does in 3 days (at this point he was resisting doing any more), it seemed like a small victory and perhaps a very tiny step towards eventual understanding.

Multiplication Models

I have attached this here for us to access anytime. Looking at the model again, I have noticed that I also imagine the creation process of each model. For example, splitting model suggests me to imagine that the creation starts from the black disc towards the orange ones like a tree but the opposite is also possible. How do you see them?
