He portrays himself as a wealthy man who inherited his money from the death of his whole family. Gatsby claims he was educated at Oxford (a family tradition). This was his appearance but Gatsby's reality is he made all his money from illegal crime, his dad is still alive, and he went to St. Olaf's for two weeks and dropped out. He also shows Daisy that he is capable of taking care of her because he makes Daisy feel secure. Gatsby was born into the family of a poor family that worked as unsuccessful farmers, he didn't want to live a life like that and practically disowned his parents in order to accomplish the "perfect" life. When he finally was able to live the lavish lifestyle he wanted, he never told anyone the truth about himself and because if this people began making assumptions about him and how he got his money. These three quotes are some of the assumptions his party guests made about him. When Tome first brings Nick to meet Myrtle they take him to the apartment that they share and she tries to dress and act like Daisy. She is putting on this appearance that she is a rich woman and that she was born with that reputation. When they arrive at the apartment Myrtle changes into the cream colored dress.
