The message you can grasp from this theme is the way someone presents themselves isn't always accurate, their reality is deeper than the appearance you see. Gatsby tries to forget his past by lying and making up a new one, but it comes back and your true colors will always come through. "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." This quote reveals that no matter how hard you try to run from the past, it will always hold you back. Your past will come back to haunt you, there is no escaping it.

Gatsby himself represents an illusion, hence his name "Great Gatsby." Gatsby is not great, he is very mysterious and lies about his past. His name was James Gatz but he changed it to Jay Gatsby in hope to be dissociated with his past. He portrays himself as a wealthy man who inherited his money from the death of his whole family. Gatsby claims he was educated at Oxford (a family tradition). This was his appearance but Gatsby's reality is he made all his money from illegal crime, his dad is still alive, and he went to St. Olaf's for two weeks and dropped out. He also shows Daisy that he is capable of taking care of her because he makes Daisy feel secure. Although he has the money but Gatsby does not have the reputation she desires.

Gatsby is a man who lives under mountain of lies. He has come up with this illusions that he wants everyone to see, so they can't see the truth behind him. Through out the novel we find out more and more about Gatsby's past and how he changed his appearance to seem like the perfect rich guy. Gatsby was born into the family of a poor family that worked as unsuccessful farmers, he didn't want to live a life like that and practically disowned his parents in order to accomplish the "perfect" life. When he finally was able to live the lavish lifestyle he wanted, he never told anyone the truth about himself and because if this people began making assumptions about him and how he got his money. These three quotes are some of the assumptions his party guests made about him. They show how people saw him as a "person".

Myrtle is a poor woman who lives in the Valley of Ashes, she is having an affair with Tom. When Tome first brings Nick to meet Myrtle they take him to the apartment that they share and she tries to dress and act like Daisy. She is putting on this appearance that she is a rich woman and that she was born with that reputation. When they arrive at the apartment Myrtle changes into the cream colored dress. The color of the dress shows that Myrtle isn't as pure as she is letting on.

Tom and Daisy put on an appearance that they are the perfect, happy, married couple and through out the novel we are shown that they aren't and are just as corrupted as everyone else. In the scene where Nick first when to the Buchanan's house, Tom got a call from Myrtle during dinner and when Daisy followed him into the other room she came back like nothing was wrong. Also, after when Daisy killed Myrtle, they were moving to a different place in order to contain their "perfect" image.
