State: Schools should have more PE lessons.

Elaborate: Schools have more PE lessons as it plays an important role in shaping moral values. During PE lessons, we are required to work collaboratively to complete tasks such as performing a gymnastic stunt that requires coordination with our partner. More PE lessons equates to more opportunities to develop our social skills. This will enable us to learn moral values such as showing care and concern to our peers, and applying teamwork skills during the activities.

Personal Experience/Research

Conclude: Therefore, schools should have more PE lessons as they help nurture social skills in children.

Improved Physical Fitness

As the most prominent and obvious benefit – the use of physical activities throughout the curriculum help to improve your student’s overall current physical fitness. Ensuring that children are physically fit from a young age can help prevent future health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma and high blood pressure – so it is important to create healthy habits early on within your pupil’s lives.

Teaches Self Discipline

Most people see PE as a way to ensure that students are kept physically healthy – but it also teaches them many lessons which can be converted into real-life scenarios when they grow up. Self-discipline is one of the most important skills to have – especially when revising for exams and working full time as an adult. Physical Education helps to teach this.

Improves leadership skills and goal setting

Alike to self-discipline, it is extremely important to teach your pupils good leadership skills to prepare them for their future in the world of work. Allocating team captains for sports such as Quidditch can help pupils learn to work with small groups and assist them to complete a common task (for example, score a goal). This is the same for other important skills such as communication, goal setting and working as a team.

Stress Reduction

Everyone knows that education, lessons and exams can cause mass amounts of the stress of students of a certain age – especially in high school. Encouraging fun in sports-related environments can help to give them a break from the school-related stress that they may be feeling throughout the day and give them a fun and healthy outlet for this.

Other than developing physical skills, PE teaches children intellectual skills, helps them navigate complex social situations, and nurtures their emotional development. Exercise promotes positive feelings and make people feel energetic, motivated and help reduce the symptoms of mental illnesses such as depression. These days, many schoolchildren eat unhealthy foods and drink a lot of soft drinks. Exercise helps burn off the extra calories, preventing obesity and many illnesses in later life, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

Keep reading to learn why students need and thrive with physical education as part of their regular routine and school curriculum.

1. Physical Fitness and Good Habits

One of the most obvious benefits of physical education being a part of school curriculum is that it helps students develop good habits in other areas of their lives. It also can help them develop a respect for and education regarding the importance of being physically active.

Many youths spend much less than the suggested 60 minutes of vigorous exercise or physical activity in a day. The majority of youth in Canada spend more time sitting staring at their phones, mobile devices or computer playing games, chatting with friends and talking on social media than they do participating in physical activity.

It is estimated that at least 1 in 4 youth in Canada are obese or overweight. Much of this is due to a lack of physical activity and less focus on physical education that in past decades.

Even if students didn’t get a lot of sports or aerobic activity during school hours in the past, they would be sent outside to play once school was over. Physical education in public school used to be a mandatory part of each day and now it’s not even a mandatory part of each week. For many youth physical fitness has become an elective that isn’t focused on and certainly isn’t promoted with the enthusiasm of past decades.

2. Mental Well-being

Physical activity isn’t just important for physical fitness and to combat the negative habits of children and youth, but it is crucial to their mental health and well-being also. Music, art and physical fitness classes are the first to get cut in the budget for many school boards, not realizing as they do so, the mental health of youth in Canada has declined.

Classes such as gym, art, and music are not only important for developing the skills taught but are also critical in helping a child develop self-confidence, self-esteem, cooperation, and coordination skills. Critical thinking, collaboration, self-awareness, and cooperation skills are all learned during team sports, creative endeavors and physical fitness programs.

There is solid research showing physical activity can help improve mental health, reduce depression, give children a stronger sense of self and learning how to work well with others.

3. Physical Education Improves Health

A proper physical education and health and fitness program not only helps youth stay physically fit and mentally healthier, it improves your overall physical health.

The benefits of a regular and routine physical fitness regime are notable and essential to a healthy life both during school and in their life in the future.

Physical activity on a regular basis (the suggested 60 minutes or more a day of aerobic physical activity each day) can help reduce the risks of:

Heart disease

High blood pressure

High cholesterol and blood sugar

Stroke

Diabetes

A regular fitness routine can even reduce one’s risk of developing certain types of cancer and other physical and mental conditions.

4. Attention and Concentration

Physical fitness is not only good for reducing your risk of many illnesses both physical and mental but it can actually help you concentrate and perform better in cognitive and mental health activities as well.

Research has shown that physical fitness can help with cognitive ability and memory. Students can understand, remember, and recall information better now and in the future with a regular fitness routine.

We live in a world where physical fitness isn’t focused on and we have greater than ever numbers of students who aren’t focused either. ADHD, autism, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, and other conditions are on the rise as our attention and efforts to improve physical health and activity is put on the back burner for a more cyberspace based world.

Physical activity helps blood flow which helps thoughts flow so students who have gym or aerobic activities introduced as part of their daily routine tend to perform better in class for their other classes. They are able to understand and concentrate while the information is being taught. It improves their ability to relate the information they learn to real life and it makes it easier for them to recall things they’ve learned later in life.

Physical Activity Is Essential to Healthy Happy Youth

Physical education is essential to giving our next generation the skills and tools they need to be successful in life. They can learn better, socialize more easily, develop leadership skills and communication skills.

It isn’t just good for mental and physical health now while they are participating in school but also has long-lasting benefits for the future.

Click here for some more reasons of why we have daily physical education sessions and the types of activities that we do.

There are many contributing causes to this trend, including poor nutrition and more sedentary lifestyles. Considering all factors, though, could the decline in physical education in schools be another significant reason?

When considering an average student’s day once they get home, complete homework, and eat dinner, kids do not have much additional time for physical activities. That being the case, this data suggests that 71 percent of students are left with minimal chances of meeting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. An exercise class, which takes a one-way instructional approach, invariably lacks the opportunities for these aspects of learning to take place, and encourages pupils to be creative, solve problems, and plan for the future. By working together, pupils can address physical and intellectual challenges while learning to communicate and manage risk and conflict, one time in a game of Captains Ball, I coordinated with my team and help to win.

1. Encourages physical activity for life

Regular exercise and movement are required for optimum health in our lives. A physical education class is the ideal setting for instilling healthy habits and acquiring an understanding of one's own fitness and mobility abilities. Daily physical education is an essential component of a complete educational program. It encourages children to be physically active and develop the abilities and confidence they need to be active throughout their lives, which is beneficial for them both physically and emotionally.

Keeping active for life as a result of a quality PE program directly correlates with Shape America's Standard 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction*. This recognition can be acquired early and maintained for a lifetime.

2. Helps prevent sickness and disease

Regular exercise can not only improve your physical health, but it may also help you avoid illness and disease. Physical activity has been linked to a strengthened immune system, which makes us less likely to get sick. It also aids in the reduction of stress, improvement of mental health, weight management, and overall energy levels. And since PE classes are a great way to get people moving, they can play a big role in keeping our students healthy.

3. Provides an outlet for creativity and self-expression

PE gives young people the opportunity to express themselves in a different way than they do in the classroom. They can let loose, have fun, and be creative without having to worry about grades or competition. PE is a great outlet for kids who may not be as academically inclined as their peers. It allows them to still feel like they're part of the class and gives them a chance to show their personality.

Physical education also provides an outlet for kids who are shy or introverted. It's a great way for them to get out of their shell and interact with other kids in a non-threatening environment. It may be a wonderful opportunity for kids to have some fun, discover their talents, and just be themselves.

4. Develops cooperation and teamwork

Physical education helps students develop social skills and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others. In PE, students learn how to share, take turns, and cooperate with classmates to accomplish a common goal. These skills are essential for success in school and later on, in the workplace. It can also help a student develop teamwork skills by teaching them how to communicate effectively, set goals, and problem-solve as a team. These skills are essential for success in any endeavor.

Developing a cooperative, collaborative attitude is crucial for meeting Shape America's Standard 4 which reads: The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others*. The capacity to respect oneself and others may be extended to all aspects of a child's or adolescent's life

5. Builds self-confidence

Physical education classes help to develop self-assurance and determination in children. It can help to boost confidence, as they see themselves achieving their goals and improving their abilities. A student's confidence can be greatly enhanced if they improve their fitness level or acquire new movement skills. They also learn how to cooperate with others and handle winning and losing gracefully. These are all vital abilities for youngsters who compete in outside individual and team sports.

Shape America's Standard 2 reads: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance*. This is applied when a young person learns a new skill or movement in a PE class. They can then apply that knowledge to be more self-assured in a game or performance-based sports setting.

6. Provides opportunities for personal goal-setting

One of the most outstanding features of PE is the opportunity it provides students to create individual goals and self-discipline. This could be anything from improving their fitness levels to learning a new sport or perfecting a particular skill set. Having something to aim for gives children a real sense of purpose and motivation in PE, which can carry over into other areas of their lives.

Setting goals also helps children to track their progress and see how far they've come. This can be a great source of pride and satisfaction. Teachers can help students establish goals for themselves, which is an excellent approach to motivate them to reach Shape America's Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness*.

7. Increases personal fitness and motor skill development

Physical education is a prime outlet for kids and adolescents to intentionally develop both their health and skill-related components of fitness. Students who participate in regular physical activity can get a lot out of their PE lessons. This is accomplished through repetition, practice, and creative movement situations. They may learn more about their bodies and how to use them appropriately in a variety of settings.

PE is a broad discipline that includes numerous options for students to participate in team and individual sports, dance, and gymnastics. A skill acquired early in life may be transferred to other similar skills or activities and put to use for the remainder of one's life, resulting in better health as an adult.

The physical benefits of developing personal fitness and motor skills are directly linked to Shape America's Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns*. Physical education may be the only opportunity for younger individuals to learn a variety of motor skills and move their bodies in a meaningful way.

8. Helps reduce stress and anxiety

PE can be the perfect outlet to reduce stress and anxiety for young people. When kids are allowed to be active and move their bodies at school, it becomes a natural body and mind energizer that makes the rest of the day far more enjoyable. According to recent research, physical education may play an important role in lowering cortisol levels, which is linked to stress. Physical activity may help to improve mood and emotional stability. Regular physical exercise can also aid in the prevention of anxiety disorders. These anti-stress benefits, in the end, assist children and adolescents to become better students.

9. Strengthens relationships with others

Physical education is not only about enhancing one's physical capabilities and motor skills. It's also about teaching individuals to collaborate and develop leadership skills. Students are frequently forced to work together as part of their PE lessons to complete assigned activities or objectives. This allows them to strengthen relationships with their classmates. In some cases, these relationships can last a lifetime. PE can also help to build communication skills and teach students how to better manage conflict. All of these factors contribute to the development of strong, healthy relationships with others.

10. Boosts academic learning

Numerous studies have shown that there is a strong link between physical activity and academic achievement. PE can improve concentration, attention, and memory, as well as reduce stress and fatigue. All of these factors can lead to improved grades and test scores.

Physical activity can help to increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which can improve cognitive function. PE can also help to improve students’ executive functioning skills, such as planning, organizing, and multitasking.

Another way that PE boosts academic performance is by improving energy levels and mood. Physical activity boosts the production of endorphins, which can help to improve mood and energy levels in kids. This can make it easier to focus and learn in the classroom.

The research is clear: There is a significant, positive and directly proportionate connection between school PE and academic performance. Children benefit from daily physical activity in multiple ways, many of which support their achievement in subjects like math, science, social studies and Language Arts. Schools and districts that prioritize movement during the school day are serving their students’ needs not just on a physical level, but also on social, psychological, emotional and academic levels as well. So why aren’t more schools making it a point to prioritize daily physical activity for their students?

Kids Aren’t Moving Their Bodies Enough—And Their Academic Performance is Suffering

In 2010, the federal government set a researched-based recommendation for how much moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) children should engage in on a daily basis for their health. The daily minimum that researchers determined was 60 minutes per day of activities like walking or running, playing basketball or tag, dancing or riding a bike, or anything else that gets the heart pumping. This daily minimum has been found to improve health, protect against preventable diseases, and promote overall quality of life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children benefit in multiple ways when they meet that recommended minimum of 60 minutes of MVPA per day. Most schoolchildren aren’t able to meet that minimum, however, due to academic achievement standards and resulting pressure on schools to decrease recess and Physical Education time in favor of more core curricular instruction time. The unfortunate irony is that decreasing PE time in order to improve students’ academic performance is counterproductive.

Daily Physical Activity Improves Learning and Coping Skills

The physical health benefits of daily movement are perhaps the most obvious and well known to most people. PE class helps children develop their gross and fine motor skills and improve their strength, balance and cardiovascular health. Many may not recognize, however, that PE class also offers children myriad social, mental and emotional benefits that in turn improve their learning and academic performance.

For example, students learn better when their bodies are calm and in control, when they are able to focus, and when they possess strategies for managing stressful situations. Daily physical activity helps them develop all of these skills. Recess and PE help children develop empathy, cooperation and respect for others. Kids who move their bodies on a regular basis experience both personal and social benefits from working through the variety of challenges and feelings they experience during MVPA. All of these benefits translate directly to the classroom and academic achievement.

Daily physical activity has also been proven to offer cognitive benefits such as better concentration and mental alertness, which help children have the focus and energy they need to tackle academic challenges. Furthermore, physical activity has been shown to improve recall and memory, including the ability to move newly acquired information from short-term memory to long-term memory. This aids in students’ learning of facts, dates, vocabulary words and other important elements of their academic lessons.

Daily physical activity also improves student learning via the simple fact that improved physical health means fewer school days missed due to illness or injury, and more time in school means more opportunities for learning and academic achievement.

We Believe in the Long-Term Importance of a Physically Active Childhood

Research supporting the need for increased physical activity among people of all ages is abundantly clear. At Marathon Kids, we believe deeply in the importance of laying that foundation early. Children who develop the habit of being physically active from a young age have a much stronger likelihood of staying active throughout their lives, and that has multiple long-term health benefits.

The Marathon Kids program is based on cumulative mileage accrued over time. This emphasis on building slowly toward a long-term goal helps children develop skills that apply directly to their academic development as well. Setting goals and mapping out the step-by-step process to achieving them are skill sets that kids can use in all areas of their lives, including their core curriculum classes. Setting their own paces and tackling distances that match their own, individual abilities and fitness levels helps children learn to stretch themselves in ways that are right for them—regardless of what their peers might be accomplishing.

While the Marathon Kids mission focuses specifically on running (and walking), the benefits of regular exercise come from any type of aerobic physical activity. Still, research shows that the Marathon Kids program increases kids’ chances of meeting the recommended daily minimum of 60 minutes of MVPA. Schools that incorporate the Marathon Kids program into their daily schedules are making an important commitment to their students’ health in both the short and long term, by giving children the opportunity to improve their physical health, decrease their stress and anxiety levels, and shine academically.

What is the impact of physical education on students’ well-being and academic success?

Decreasing time for quality phys-ed to allow more instructional time for core curricular subjects – including math, science, social studies and English – is counterproductive, given its positive benefits on health outcomes and school achievement.

Research confirms that healthier students make better learners. The term quality physical education is used to describe programs that are catered to a student’s age, skill level, culture and unique needs. They include 90 minutes of physical activity per week, fostering students’ well-being and improving their academic success. However, instructional time for quality phys-ed programs around the world are being decreased to prioritize other subject areas (especially math, science, social studies and English) in hopes to achieve higher academic achievement. However, several studies have identified a significant relationship between physical activity and academic achievement. Research also demonstrates that phys-ed does not have negative impacts on student success and that it offers the following physical, social, emotional and cognitive benefits:

Physical

Quality phys-ed helps students understand how exercise helps them to develop a healthy lifestyle, gain a variety of skills that help them to participate in a variety of physical activities and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Social

Quality phys-ed provides students with the opportunity to socialize with others and learn different skills such as communication, tolerance, trust, empathy and respect for others. They also learn positive team skills including cooperation, leadership, cohesion and responsibility. Students who play sports or participate in other physical activities experience a variety of emotions and learn how to better cope in stressful, challenging or painful situations.

Emotional

Quality phys-ed can be associated with improved mental health, since increased activity provides psychological benefits including reduced stress, anxiety and depression. It also helps students develop strategies to manage their emotions and increases their self-esteem.

Cognitive

Research tends to show that increased blood flow produced by physical activity may stimulate the brain and boost mental performance. Avoiding inactivity may also increase energy and concentration in the classroom.

Therefore, decreasing time for quality phys-ed to allow more instructional time for core curricular subjects – including math, science, social studies and English – is counterproductive, given its positive benefits on health outcomes and school achievement.

5 Reasons Physical Education is Just as Important as School Work:

1. Physical activity enhances an individual’s ability to think, concentrate, & focus.
Several research studies show that performing physical activities helps in enlarging the basal ganglia of the brain.
The Basal Ganglia is a part of the brain which is responsible to maintain an individual’s capability to focus.
In this current era, students have several diversions in the form of technology (television, tablets, PCs, mobile phones), therefore, it is difficult for them to maintain focus.
By promoting physical education, school teachers can help them improve their concentration.
Scientific research also reveals that physical education in school helps improve the connections between neurons in the brain.
Healthy and well-connected neurons help improve the over-all thinking ability of students, thus, making them more efficient in the classroom.

2. Physical activity is important for healthy growth & development.
In today’s world, many school children eat unhealthy foods. These may include fries, soft drinks, pizzas, and burgers.
Consuming these on a regular basis can lead to childhood obesity.
Physical education at school helps in preventing obesity and high blood pressure.
Physical exercise and activities will help burn off extra calories. If these calories are not burned off they will be stored as fat.
By doing physical exercises individuals use their extra calories to gain energy.
Plus, such activities play an important role in the healthy growth and development of bones and cartilages.
Bone strengthening exercises such as jumping are particularly important for school children as such activities produce a force onto the bone that helps enhance its strength and growth.
While muscle strengthening exercises make muscles larger and stronger, they also help children carry more weight and aid in protecting joints against injuries.
Being physically active makes the students energetic and strong, which can help motivate them to take interest in classroom activities.
Exercises that help strengthen muscles include:

climbing trees

using monkey bars

bike riding

doing push-ups

hula hooping

A physically active student will also have a healthy heart.

Any exercise which provides oxygen to the muscles is called an aerobic exercise. Such exercises are essential for a healthy heart.

Research shows that children who perform aerobic exercises, two to three times a week for at least twenty minutes, have a healthier heart as compared to those who don’t take part in physical education.

Some of the healthy aerobic exercises are:

playing basketball

playing soccer

jumping rope

3. Physical activity prevents sleep deprivation.

A complete night’s sleep is an essential component of a happy and healthy life.

Those students who take part in physical activities and exercise regularly have a tired and exhausted body that craves a good night’s sleep.

Complete sleep makes kids more upright and attentive during lectures in the classroom.

Being attentive will help prevent them from performing careless mistakes and will provide them the energy to be helpful towards teachers and fellow students.

4. Physical activity helps relieve stress and anxiety.

School life is hectic for every individual.

Therefore, taking part in physical activities and education allows students to relieve their academic stress and anxiety.

Stress might be due to a fight with a friend or a low grade despite hard work.

Stressed students are not able to concentrate and focus on their academic performance, if they are not allowed time to de-stress.

Physical activities give students an environment to breathe out their stress.

By exercising and breathing deeply, we provide extra air to our lungs which in turn provides more oxygen to the brain, this makes the brain feel relaxed and stress-free.

A physically active individual is more likely to be happy and healthy, which makes them a better student in the classroom.

They often feel proud and happy about themselves and are good towards their fellow students.

5. Physical activity makes an individual flexible and happy.

Many schools have made physical education an essential component of their school curriculum and students are promoted to maintain a healthy balance between their education and exercise.

This is due to the fact that those students who take part in physical activities have proved to be happier and healthier than those students who spend all their time doing school work.

Such activities help develop blood circulation in an individual’s body.

This helps in providing more oxygen to the heart and brain and allows the body to maintain a balance between physical and mental health.

Balancing exercise and stretching also help improve flexibility and physical balance which decreases the chances of injuries.
