The first one is the sound of a car driving. I recorded it because cars are so common in daily life, but when you listen closely, the tire sounds create an interesting rhythm.

The second is a bird pecking. I found it fascinating because it’s such a small, detailed sound, yet it conveys the energy and liveliness of nature.

The third is the sound of raindrops hitting leaves. I chose this because the soft tapping on the leaves creates a calming, almost musical pattern that feels very soothing.

Through the teacher's introduction, I gained a preliminary understanding of the basic concepts of sound art. I have learned that the course will cover sound recording, sound experiments, and the exploration of the relationship between sound and space. I carefully read the assignment requirements and clarified the project contents that needed to be completed, such as sound collection, editing and creation and other practical tasks, which provided a direction for the subsequent preparation of the work.

He led us to visit the recording and post-production venues provided by the school, including the recording studio, mixing area, and the freely usable equipment area. In class, the tutor elaborately explained the usage of the recording equipment and demonstrated the basic operation process, enabling us to better understand the actual recording steps and precautions. We began the content of Exercise 1. The goal of the practice is to allow us to personally experience the basic process of recording, from choosing the recording object, setting up the equipment to actually collecting sounds.

In the third week, the tutor first gave us a detailed introduction to the usage methods of various recording devices and demonstrated how to use these devices to collect different types of environmental sounds and specific sound effects. Through this session, I have further deepened my understanding of the operation of recording equipment and become more familiar with how to choose the most suitable tools in different situations. The tutor taught the concept of Room Resonance. He explained how the acoustic characteristics of a room affect sound propagation. For instance, the size of the space, the material of the walls, and the placement of objects all alter the reflection and absorption of sound, thereby generating specific resonance effects. We learned methods for measuring and capturing room resonance, including tapping, clapping or using a specific frequency sound source to test the acoustic response of the room. After grasping the basic principles, we were divided into groups to carry out practical operations: first, we chose a classroom or corridor as the recording venue, and then tried to capture the unique acoustic effects of the room with different equipment and angles.

He encouraged me to try more techniques in post-production.

The concept of this assignment is Inside vs. Outside

The purpose is to compare the quiet details at home - low-intensity sounds - with the high-intensity noises outside the door - high-intensity sounds.

This work lasts for 3 minutes and 17 seconds. When we hear this sound, the first thing that begins is the low-intensity sounds, the quiet details of the home. We can hear the sounds of pencils, breathing, tapping on keyboards, and turning pages of books. When the knock on the door rang,

After opening the door, the quiet sound stopped.

Next, we heard the high-intensity sounds outside the door. We could hear the noisy sounds of the street, the sounds of vehicles moving, the sounds of light rail starting, the sounds of renovation and the shrill sirens. When the door was closed, everything returned to calm.

My works aim to convey the contradictory relationship between "personal space and social environment", and reflect how inner peace is disrupted by the outside world. In the flow of auditory perception, the audience can experience how easily the rhythm of modern urban life permeates the personal world. They can also ponder: In an environment that cannot be completely isolated, how can we maintain inner peace and redefine our relationship with the outside world?

We have learned about the three sources of soundscape and how to analyze sounds in the environment using theme sounds, sound labels and sound signals. In addition, the course also explains the physical principles of sound - everything is vibrating. Through the practice of making contact microphones, it enables us to understand how to amplify the vibration on the surface of objects and convert it into audible sound.

Through practical activities, we used contact microphones and hydrophones to record the vibration sounds of different objects and explored the way sound propagates in various materials. The course also introduced the types and colors of noise, as well as the differences in structure and rules between music and noise. In addition, we studied sonification theory to understand how to transform data into sound to create new auditory experiences. This class enabled us to understand that sound is not only music but also a combination of science and art.

We learned about the decibel (dB) principle of sound, understood that auditory perception is logarithmic, and that prolonged exposure to high-decibel environments may cause hearing damage. The course also introduces the combination of acoustic art and science, such as converting data, brain waves or network activities into sound, allowing "inaudible sounds" to be perceived. In addition, we also learned how electromagnetic waves, ultrasonic waves, static electricity and motion are used by artists to create soundscape installations. This class made us realize that sound is not only a physical phenomenon but also a medium for expressing and understanding the world.

This work takes "transforming daily household chores into artistic experiences" as its core. By re-collecting, editing and combining the sounds of kitchen items during use, it constructs a sound installation with an immersive and spatial sense. The Kitchen Symphony aims to make the audience re-aware of the overlooked rhythms, noises and voiceprints in daily life, and further reflect on "how sound carries emotions, spatial memories and the traces of physical labor". In the work, the metallic echo of the pot lid, the faint sound of bubbles before the kettle boils, the low-frequency vibration of the microwave oven running, and the rhythm of cutting vegetables, etc., are all reorganized to reveal the hidden acoustic layers in household activities.

The exhibition form simulates a semi-open kitchen space and builds a multi-channel playback system with four surround speakers. The audience can move freely in the space, experiencing the changes in the position, direction and distance of the sound, making themselves feel as if they were in a "kitchen being played". This stereo experience not only emphasizes the physical spatiality of sound but also allows the subtle sounds in the daily environment to be re-focused on and amplified.

This work aims to make the audience realize that the seemingly insignificant noises and rhythms in daily life are actually deeply embedded in our physical experiences, recording the repetition of life, the traces of labor and the flow of emotions. The Kitchen Symphony transforms the ordinary sounds of household chores into sound art with aesthetic value, guiding people to rethink the relationship between "household chores, space and the body", and to understand the meaning of "daily life" and the overlooked aesthetic potential in a new way.
