I see myself not behind the desk, but engaged in conversations to grow relationships and spark imagination. I also hear the community buzzing about what they've seen us doing in the library on social media, and have a desire to constantly be checking out what is new in the library.

Rachel L. I quickly learned that the elementary library I worked in for 2 months this past school year is a central HUB of the school. I never envisioned or expected that when I took the long-term position! The school library is literally the center of the school physically, but it is also a space where staff are frequently traveling through. I loved seeing so many staff passing through, greeting and smiling at each, and just feeling so connected to others. It was a let down when I moved to a 4th grade long-term job after my library position. I rarely saw much of the school wide staff, and I dearly missed those connections and interactions.

I imagined a colorful room with many signs and defined spaces to locate books that will suit each students needs and desires. I see students showing their friends where they found their books at. I also envisioned a place that is an enrichment area for anyone that enjoys STEM before school to come and participate in the learning centers that are created around the space. It is also a place of self--discovery. Not overly loud, but filled with the energy and excitement of the youth that are entering the room as they find the perfect book that makes them want to read. The staff are smiling, helpful, and interested in each child. There are comfortable reading nooks and varied displays to draw the students in. There are book clubs during lunches to encourage and celebrate reading.

I have been fighting the good fight to get students more involved in our three libraries, so my "visions" are centered around my goals for each library, I guess. At the elementary school, I envision a new "library helper" group of 5th graders helping younger students that are engaging in book searches, battle of the books, and maker activities during lunchtime. I hear laughter, fun, and excited conversation. In the middle school, I envision much the same thing, except it is during lunch and after school - and involves extracurriculars like chess club, coding club, and forensics/public speaking. The high school is a bit quieter - students are interacting in study groups, book clubs & searches, and puzzling and playing VR together in the makerspace.

My dream library would be a school hub for accessing information, I envision it being filled with engaged students using technology and researching using the library catalog. I would like the library to be a special place where young students have memories of their favorite read-aloud, where primary grades feel comfortable to discuss ideas, where middle schoolers learn to research and conduct research. My library will be a peaceful place with meaningful discussion. I want to host small book clubs and participate in WEMTA Battle of the Books. I want to collaborate with teachers to support classroom curriculum and host a makerspace club with middle schoolers. I want my students to feel comfortable with me and I want non-readers to become readers and find a book they absolutely love. I want strong readers to ask me for recommendations and give me recommendations. I want to guide learning.
