  • Se fundó para hacer énfasis en las discusiones que tuvieran que ver con el área de la literatura o la filosofía.
  • Cuando se creó el Ateneo de la Juventud la corriente del positivismo estaba pasando por dificultades teóricas.
  • Se caracterizó por ser un grupo cultural. Aunque se oponían a la ideología del gobierno de turno, no hicieron manifestaciones contra el porfiriato.
  • Estuvieron rodeados por algunas polémicas, especialmente por el foco que tenía su actividad. Llegaron a existir tres ideas diferentes sobre el objetivo que tenía el grupo.
  • Por una parte, miembros como Caso y Vasconcelos, respaldados por otros miembros del grupo, aseguraron que formaron parte de un movimiento revolucionario.
