Thesis statement:In King Lear, the theme of human nature's good and evil runs through the entire text. Under the influence of power, interests and kinship, the characters reveal their good and evil sides, profoundly revealing the impact caused by the good and evil of human nature.

Good my lord, You have begot me, bred me, loved me: I Return those duties back as are right fit, Obey you, love you, and most honour you. Why have my sisters husbands, if they say They love you all? Haply, when I shall wed, That lord whose hand must take my plight shall carry Half my love with him, half my care and duty: Sure, I shall never marry like my sisters, To love my father all.(I.i.58 - 67)

This passage reflects Cordelia's sincere love for her father, which is a manifestation of the goodness in human nature. She is unwilling to obtain the inheritance right by flattering her sisters as they do. Her love for her father is instinctive. Whether she gets married or not in the future, she will always reserve half of her heart for her father. This shows her kindness and integrity. In this picture, the mother and daughter are leaning on each other. The mother has her eyes closed and her expression is very relaxed, showing a sense of peace. She holds the little girl tightly with her arms, demonstrating her sincere love for her daughter. The little girl is also clinging closely to her mother and kissing her cheek. Such body language is an expression of emotion. The entire scene is warm and peaceful, and the sunlight adds a touch of warmth to the picture. This environment also highlights the purity of their relationship. This picture represents the deep affection between mother and daughter. The mother and daughter are connected by genuine love. Their pure emotions are consistent with Cordelia's love for her father. Their love is unreserved and only the most sincere feelings.

Kent, on thy life, no more. My life I never held but as a pawn To wage against thy enemies; nor fear to lose it, Thy safety being the motive.” (I.i.168 - 171)

Kent was filled with loyalty and respect for King Lear. Even when King Lear was exiled due to his daughters' betrayal, Kent followed him at all costs and protected him with his life, which demonstrated his unwavering and kind-hearted loyalty. This is the goodness in human nature. In this picture, the two people are holding each other's hands tightly. They carry a close bond and a firm commitment to each other. Moreover, shaking hands itself is a way to express trust and loyalty. The deeper meaning of this picture is that they are willing to support each other and never abandon each other in times of hardship. This unwavering commitment is in line with Kent's loyalty to King Lear.

“Give me your arm: Up: so. How is 't? Feel you your legs? You stand. … Bear free and patient thoughts. But who comes here?” (IV.vi.105 - 106)

When Gloucester was persecuted and blinded, his son Edgar carefully guided and cared for him, allowing Gloucester to regain a bit of hope. This demonstrated Edgar's kindness and filial piety. In the picture, the old man's daughter holds her mother's hand, an action that shows her concern for her mother. The old man's daughter leans forward and gets close to her mother, highlighting the deep affection between them and their close relationship. The daughter takes the old man outside to breathe fresh air, which is a manifestation of filial piety and her care for her mother. The deeper meaning of this picture is the daughter's companionship and support for her mother, as well as her respect for her. This meaning is consistent with Edgar's feelings towards Gloucester. They both want to show filial piety and make their loved ones live better, which is also the kindness in human nature.

“He hath ever but slenderly known himself. The best and soundest of his time hath been but rash; then must we look from his age to receive not alone the imperfections of long - encroach'd - upon usurpation, but therewithal the unruly waywardness that infirm and choleric years bring with them.” (I.i.144 - 147）

This quote reveals that upon receiving her father's inheritance, Goneril immediately shows her true colors and begins to belittle King Lear, her words brimming with dissatisfaction towards him. This demonstrates her betrayal of her father. In this picture, the person behind reaches out and pushes the one in front, an action symbolizing betrayal, akin to stabbing someone in the back. The person in front stands at the edge of a cliff with their head down, completely unguarded. They might have trusted the person behind them, further highlighting the betrayal of the latter. The true meaning of this picture is that betrayal can lead the other party into an irreparable predicament, a rupture of trust. The content this picture intends to convey aligns with Goneril's betrayal of her father. Both seem to respect each other on the surface but detest each other to the core behind the scenes, wishing the other dead. This also reflects Goneril's later abuse of King Lear, revealing the evil in human nature.

“Thou, nature, art my goddess; to thy law My services are bound. Wherefore should I Stand in the plague of custom, and permit The curiosity of nations to deprive me, For that I am some twelve or fourteen moon - shines Lag of a brother? Why bastard? wherefore base? … Legitimate Edgar, I must have your land: Our father's love is to the bastard Edmund As to the legitimate: fine word,—legitimate! Well, my legitimate, if this letter speed, And my invention thrive, Edmund the base Shall top the legitimate. I grow; I prosper: Now, gods, stand up for bastards!” (I.ii.1 - 18)

Edmund, resentful of his status as a bastard, plotted against his brother Edgar to seize the family's wealth and position. Eventually, he betrayed his family, a behavior driven by selfishness and malice. In this picture, most of the area is in shadow, with only a part of the face illuminated by light. Although only a portion of the face is visible, the corners of the mouth are upturned, and this sneer appears extremely eerie against this backdrop, giving a sense of ill-intent and scheming. In this photo, the person is wearing a hoodie, with their eyes concealed. Since the eyes are often the windows to the soul, covering them gives the subject an air of conspiracy. This image conveys a sense of cunning and evil through the interplay of light and shadow, as well as the facial expression, revealing the dark side of the character's inner self. This inner darkness aligns perfectly with Edmund's resentment towards his brother, highlighting the evil side of human nature.

“Did my father strike my gentleman for chiding of his fool? … By day and night he wrongs me; every hour He flashes into one gross crime or other, That sets us all at odds: I'll not endure it: His knights grow riotous, and himself upbraids us On every trifle. When he returns from hunting, I will not speak with him; say I am sick: If you come slack of former services, You shall do well; the fault of it I'll answer.” (I.iii.1 - 11)

Oswald is Goneril's steward, completely obedient to her. Even when ordered to harm King Lear, he follows through without hesitation, insulting and persecuting the king. He is an accomplice to evil. This picture features two torn photos with obvious bloodstains, which typically symbolize violence and further highlight the evil in human nature. The fact that the two photos are placed closely together also indicates their complicit relationship. The text on the picture also shows that Monique is an accomplice to Olivier's evil deeds. All these elements in the picture reflect the profound meaning of crime and conspiracy, which is consistent with the relationship between Oswald and Goneril, both demonstrating the theme of being an accomplice to evil.
