Canada’s darkest secret

By: Ethan Dufour

Although Canada is a nice beautiful country now,it once treated its natives terribly. The children of Aboriginals were taken away to go to a boarding school. In these schools they were treated terribly. In the 1900s these children were taken and put in these schools where there culture was stripped away from them. First they would cut their hair, they thought it would get rid of the wild in them. Then they were put in a classroom away from family where they would learn to be the canadians the government wanted them to be. In these classrooms they were beaten abused and some even killed. The last residential school closed in 1996. Survivors said they would never be the same again. Survivors also said they would abuse their children because it was what they were taught to do. Some of their children committed suicide. These horrible schools ruined lives. These native families will never be the same again. One survivor said when he was released he went back to his reserve but he only knew english and canadian culture so his family could not understand him and he ran back to the residential school because he had nowhere else to go. The government is trying to reconcile with Aboriginals by making a holiday to remember the terrible things that happened in residential schools, the Aboriginals said it will take more than that but it is a good start. This is truly Canada’s darkest secret.

The Technology of the 1900's by Aiden Life before tech was very tiring, difficult and dangerous in the 1900's.Farming Before the tractor there was only a horse-drawn plow and before that there were people that went out at 3:30am to plow the fields themselves using scythe and shovels. Later in 1920 farmers started to use the tractor, a motorized plough, and they were done plowing earlier.Fishing Before fishing radars they had to just guess where the fish were and not just look at a tiny screen and find it that way. ForestryBack in the 1900's men used axes and saws they never had chainsaws.Cooking Cooking was a very slow procedure they had to let the oven heat and that usually took 5-6 hours to get to the right temperature now it take five to six minutes. If they wanted to bake a cake it would take one whole day to do it.AutomobilesBack before there were thousands of different models of cars there was only one and it was On October 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed at the company's Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford would build some 15 million Model T cars. The evolution of technology was very useful and made their lives easier. Nothing took as long as it used to. Without all this technology things would be more time-consuming and back-breaking.

I want a nice gentle creature to bring me my slippers.” “Making women equal to men would cause strife. It would break up the home, Women are too emotional.” After many many years, Nellie McClung was able to get the vote in 1916 in Manitoba, and 3 months after, Alberta got the vote.
