This quote, on page 116, shows Jeanette's unconditional love for her Dad because she has loved him through his drinking times. Not only that but Rex agrees to stop drinking for Jeanette, this shows how he is willing to stop doing something he is addicted to for his daughter. "Let's really light up Christmas," Dad said and thrust the lighter into the Douglas fir. The dried-out needles caught fire immediately. Flames leaped through the branches with crackling noise. Christmas ornaments exploded from heat. For a few moments, we were too stunned to do anything. Mom called for blankets and water. We were able to put the fire out, but only by knocking down the tree, smashing most of the ornaments, and ruining all our presents. Dad sat on the sofa the whole time, laughing and telling Mom that he was doing her a favor because trees were pagan symbols of worship..."  Even after Dad causes big scenes like this his family still continues to love him for who he is. They don't tell him to leave and never come back. This is on page 9 on e the book it says, " I was standing on a chair in front of the stove, wearing a pink dress my grandmother had bought for me. Pink was my favorite color. The dress's skirt stuck out like the tutu, and I liked to spin in front of the mirror, thinking I looked like a ballerina. But in that moment, I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs, watching them swell and bob in the boiling water as the late- morning sunlight filtered in through the trailer's small kitchenette window" This is an example of Jeanette being self- sufficient. I chose this quote because even at a young age she began to do things for herself and didn't depend on anyone else but herself. Yes, her being self sufficient may have never brought a good cause to her life because she was at danger in times but she didn't wait around for someone to feed her or oi give her the things she needed. The reason for this is in this scene Jeanette's mother didn't want to go to her normal job because she was "sick". However the reality was just that Mrs. Rose Mary just didn't like to play this role of being a mom anymore she liked just taking care of herself. In the end Jeanette sees the importance of having an income for food and gets frustrated and says, " If you wanted to be treated like a mother," you should act like one."  Then this leads to the scene where Mr. Rex Wells spanks Jeanette with his belt. With this short passage of the reality that Jeanette lives in a home where her parents aren't real parents they pretend to be in charge but they simply do not lift a finger to provide food, clothing and decent shelter. Jeanette was sent to the hospital where she enjoyed the order of the hospital," It was so hushed you could her the nurses' rubber-soled shoes squeaking all way down the hall. I wasn't used to the quiet and order, and I liked it." This was the order that Jeanette wanted however what Jeanette ended up getting was," I breathed in this familiar smell of Vitalis, whiskey, and cigarette smoke . It reminded me of home. Dad hurried down the hall with me in his arms. A nurse yelled to stop.". For example on page 172 when Jeanette's mother bought ham for everyone but they had no refrigerator so they couldn't store the ham so the ham was filled with maggots. Then Jeanette says to her mother ",Mom this ham is full of maggots.
