Hikmah or wisdom, is an important concept in Islam that involves understanding the truth and acting according to Allah’s guidance. It is not limited to knowledge alone but includes faith, fear of Allah and righteous action. Ḥikmah can be developed through sincere ibadah, as worship strengthens qualities such as humility, sincerity and dedication. Islam encourages believers to seek wisdom wherever it is found as it helps individuals live according to Islamic teachings and make wise decisions in daily life.

The acquisition of ḥikmah is closely connected to niyyah, amal and ihsan. Niyyah ensures that actions are performed sincerely for Allah, while amal refers to consistent good deeds and acts of worship. Ihsan represents excellence in worship and character, where a person acts with full awareness of Allah’s presence. Together, sincere intention, righteous action and moral excellence guide Muslims toward true wisdom and spiritual growth.

Reasons And Sources Of Hikmah From Ibadah

In Islam, acts of worship (ibadah) are not exactly ritual practices but are meaningful sources of hikmah (wisdom) that shape a believer’s character and moral consciousness. The Qur’an explains that salah (prayer) prevents immorality and wrongdoing while strengthening remembrance of Allah, guiding individuals toward ethical behavior and self discipline. Similarly, sawm (fasting) is prescribed to develop taqwa, teaching self control, patience and awareness of Allah. These forms of worship strengthen inner strength and moral clarity, enabling believers to make wise decisions and live righteously according to divine guidance.

Zakah (charity) and hajj (pilgrimage) further contribute to the acquisition of ḥikmah by promoting social responsibility and spiritual purification. Zakah purifies wealth and the soul while promoting compassion, generosity and social justice within the community. Meanwhile, ḥajj promote humility, equality, discipline and God consciousness, reminding believers that the best provision in life is taqwa. Through these acts of worship, Muslims gain wisdom that balances spiritual devotion with ethical conduct, leading to personal growth and harmony in society

Virtues Found in Salah with Khushu

Khushu in salah is defined as the presence of heart and mind before Allah S.W.T., characterized by a sense of calmness, humility and attentiveness rather than just physical movement. This state of prayer is essential for building Islamic character (akhlaq) and strengthening one’s spiritual relationship with the Creator. According to the Quran, successful believers are specifically those who humble themselves during their prayers. By fostering these qualities, salah serves as a foundational tool that prevents sinful behavior and shapes the inner self through constant devotion.

The practice of Salah with Khushu encompasses five key virtues: Al-Taah (submission), Al-Jihad (Striving in the Path of Allah), Muhasabah (self-reflection), Iffah (Modesty & Self-Restraint) and Tawaddu (humility). Through submission, a servant trains in discipline and sincere obedience to Allah's commands. The virtue of Al-Jihad involves an inner struggle (jihad al-nafs) to fight laziness and distractions, while Muhasabah encourages believers to evaluate their intentions and remain aware of their shortcomings. Furthermore, prayer acts as a form of self-restraint (Iffah) against shameful deeds and promotes humility by removing pride and recognizing one's total dependence on Allah. Ultimately, true salah is the soul of worship that transforms the heart, signifying that prayer should not merely be performed but lived.

FASTING & ITS VIRTUES

Fasting is a fundamental pillar of Islam, specifically prescribed for those who claim to believe as a way to prove their faith and demonstrate sincere devotion. By mentioning that this practice was also ordained for preceding nations, such as the Jews and Christians, Allah eases the sense of responsibility for Muslims while simultaneously encouraging them to excel beyond the spiritual efforts of those who came before them.

The Goal of Taqwa: Originates from وقاية which means precaution or prevention. The primary objective of fasting is to achieve Taqwa, which involves taking precautions against sinful behavior and remaining mindful of Allah in all actions.

Moral Discipline: To be valid, fasting must be accompanied by moral attitude. If a person does not abandon lies and false conduct, the physical act of abstaining from food and drink holds no spiritual value.

Development of Sabr (Patience): The practice builds patience through obedience to Allah, the self-restraint required to avoid prohibitions and the fortitude needed to face life's trials and calamities.

Three Levels of Fasting: According to Al-Ghazali, fasting ranges from the "Minimum" level (physical abstinence) to the "Intermediary" level (restraining the senses from sin) and the "Optimal" level (protecting the heart from worldly distractions).

Cultivating Rahmah (Mercy): Fasting instills empathy by allowing believers to experience the hunger of the less fortunate and encourages generosity through feeding others, which earns a reward equal to that of the fasting person.

In conclusion, fasting is a multi-dimensional practice that extends far beyond the simple avoidance of sustenance to include the discipline of the tongue, senses and heart. By cultivating essential qualities like patience (Sabr), mercy (Rahmah), and God-consciousness (Taqwa), it transforms the inner self and encourage a deep empathy for the suffering of others in the community. Through these various levels of discipline and the promise of great spiritual rewards, fasting serves as a profound training ground that humbles the soul and strengthens the bond between the servant and Allah.

Zakah is one of the pillars of Islam which is obligatory upon Muslim to observe it. The objective is producing a righteous servant of Allah SWT who consequently contributes to the improvement and wellbeing of other people in his community.

The technical meaning of zakah is the determined share of wealth prescribed by God to be distributed among deserving categories.

It promotes spiritual purification and social responsibility among Muslim.

This shows that zakah is very important in a Muslim's life, just like prayer.

While both Zakah and Sadaqah involve giving wealth for the sake of Allah, they serve distinct roles in Islamic practice with different levels of obligation and structure.

Level of Obligation: Zakah is a compulsory act of worship (Ibadah), whereas Sadaqah is a recommended act.

Structure: Zakah is a formal and structured ritual in Islam, but Sadaqah is neither formal nor structured.

Requirements: For Zakah, Allah SWT has specifically defined the recipients, amounts, timing and methods of payment. In contrast, these details are not specified for Sadaqah.

Scope: Zakah consists of two specific types, which are Zakah al-fitr and Zakah al-mal. Sadaqah is a broader term that includes all acts of giving and donation such as Zakah, Infaq and Waqaf.

Zakah is a compulsory act of Ibadah and a formal and structured ritual in Islam.

Zakah involves both vertical and horizontal relationships between humans and Allah SWT and fellow Muslims.

A Muslim who gives his wealth through zakah shows that he does not depend on his wealth but relies fully on Allah SWT.

Ukhuwah refers to the bond of brotherhood among people that creates harmony in life and connects them through their shared Islamic aqidah.

Conclusion

Muslims learn to rely on Allah SWT and become less attached to material things. Zakah contains spiritual and social dimensions that build care and responsibility for the needy and promote unity and togetherness in the community.

Through our usrah sessions, I have learned that Islam is more than just performing rituals, it is a complete guide for living with purpose, discipline, and compassion. Each discussion whether about acquisition of hikmah, reasons and sources of hikmah from ibadah, preperation of salah with khushu, virtues found in salah with khushu, fasting and its virtues and zaqah and sadaqah reminded me that true faith is not only what we believe, but how we apply it in our life. Usrah is not only about gaining knowledge but about applying it in our daily lives to build good character. In the end, I’ve come to see that becoming a better Muslim is a continuous journey of learning, sincerity and striving for Ihsan. I pray that I can keep improving my akhlak, strengthen my faith, honor my parents and live with purpose and awareness of Allah in all that I do.

My Wish :

I wish to continue growing as a better Muslim someone who lives with sincerity, good manners and gratitude. I hope that Allah guides me to strengthen my faith, practice what I learn, respect my parents and strive for ihsan in everything I do, so that my actions always reflect the beauty of Islam.
