I have enlisted in the army and will fight in the war. I feel I need to be involved in this war for two reesons. I need to be involved so I may become a free man, and to have children that will not have the same fate as we have. I have not wrotten to you in a while, but we have undergone a small sea voyage down many streams to transport fellow troops to battle. We have been shoot at many times  by confederates off the shore of the river, but we remain strong, knoewing that we are fighting for a great cause. We are arriving at a battleground soon, so I must end this letter here and prepare. I love you momma.

The men on the front lynes were killed almost instantly by the fiyrepower of the cannons and the men with rifles.
I, however was placed towards the middle lynes, so many men in front of me were slaughtered. I survived the battle by killing only one person. I do not feel very ashamed of it, knowing the reason they fought for.

I have recevied word of a battle that may take place on the missisipi river soon. There is a fort off the the shore line of the missisipi that iss corruntly occupied by confederates. The officers tell me it should be happening sometime next month.

My leg is broken. The attempt failed completely and turned into an absolute massacre. not man men came out uninjured, and over half did not come out at all.
The nurse at the camp says I might be sent home, for the inabilitey to fight. I will Update you on the sitasion if they choose to send me home.
