Summary:

By accepting the Convention, states commit to ending discrimination against women by integrating gender equality into their laws, removing discriminatory laws, creating protective institutions, and ensuring no discrimination by individuals or organizations. It's crucial to monitor and ensure that countries, including the Taliban, agree and follow these practices. Human rights groups and international NGOs are essential in monitoring and supporting women's rights in countries that violate them.

Addressing gender inequality in Afghanistan faces many difficulties. The Taliban's strict interpretation of Sharia law and their control over the country create a hostile environment for implementing gender equality measures. The international community and human rights groups struggle to operate due to access and the risk of retaliation. Another problem that arises is the reduction of aid in response to the Taliban policies. These restraints on aid can also harm women rather than protect them, however even with these challenges the international community is still committed to advocate for Afghanistan women’s rights. International pressure, diplomatic effort, and support for local women is essential. These issues run deep with cultural and political barriers however it is important to keep advocating for these women in Afghanistan for a matter of justice and universal human rights.

Info abt Sharia Law: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-58249952

The issue/ problem:

Women’s rights are being violated because the Taliban is putting limitations on daily life activities. The right to education, employment and more. These limitations are confining women to just be in their homes and be discriminated against. When women attempt to defend their rights and protest they encounter severe consequences. These violations need to be addressed because they are an injustice to human rights because women should have the right to live and live without fear. Addressing these violations are crucial for the international community because it promotes gender equality.

European Parliament writes, “After the Taliban took over in 2021 women’s rights has declined, despite the claims to respect women’s rights under sharia Law” (EU 2023). Women are facing severe restrictions and has led many countries to reducing aid causing more harm to women in Afgan. Allows us to understand that international intervention is needed.
