Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law that defines "special education" as specially designed instruction that meets the student's unique needs in school, which comes at no cost to the student's parents.
The people who qualify for it can range from being an infant to 21 years old who have a developmental delay or are at risk for one.
The 6 principles are:
-Zero Reject: a rule against excluding any student
-Nondiscriminatory Evaluation: a rule requiring schools to evaluate students fairly to determine if they have a disability and, if so, what kind and how extensive
-Appropriate Education: a rule requiring schools to provide individually tailored education for each student based on evaluation and augmented by related services and supplementary aids and services
-Least Restrictive Environment: a rule requiring schools to educate students with disabilities alongside students without disabilities
-Procedural Due Process: a rule providing safeguards for students against schools' actions
-Parent and Student Participation: a rule requiring schools to collaborate with parents and adolescent students in designing and carrying out special education programs

Something that stood out to me in chapter 1 were how many laws are in place to allow students with disabilities to be able to learn without having to worry about being discriminated against. It had never really occured to me just how many laws were put in place because I never realized how heavily people with disabilities were discriminated against.
