1957 → Gov. Orval Faubus ordered Arkansas National Guard to prevent African Americans to enroll in Little Rock Central High School (white school)
Brown V. Board made segregation in public schools illegal
Faubus did not agree and met with President Eisenhower
President Eisenhower agreed to put officers to enforce order in the school
Nine African Americans, trouble began
Faubus did nothing to stop it
Eisenhower sent 1000 army patrols to restore control

Emmit Till murdered:

Fourteen year old Emmit Till from Chicago along with his cousin went to visit family in Mississippi;
He entered a store to buy some candy and was accused of talking to a white woman;
Later, a man knocked at the door of Till's cousin and demanded the boy went with him;
Days later, Emmit Till's body was found in the river;
The case went to trial but the accusers won;
After the case, a witness claimed that one of the accusers bragged about killing Till;

Four young girls die in Southern church bombing

Birmingham
Had a lot of racial attacks
Sunday morning 4 little girls -3 at the age of 14, 1 at the age of 11- were in church
Bombed and all of them died
Considered one of the worst attacks of racism
They were kids
Weren’t engaged in any civil rights movement, only wanted to pray
KKK members were pled guilty of only using dynamite, not killing them
