Page 3: Elie meets Moishe the Beadle, who is described as "awkward as a clown." Elie is 13, and Moishe appears to be a mentor figure (in a religious aspect).
Page 4: Moishe becomes Elie's teacher, pushing him to further question his faith (Judaism).
Page 5: Moishe mentors Elie in the mysteries of the Kabbalah, exposing him to deeper experiences in the realm of divinity.
Page 6: Moishe and other Jews were deported. However, Moishe was able to escape/survive and tells his story to Elie. He explains that the Jews were forced to dig large trenches and were murdered by the Gestapo.
Page 7: No one believes Moishe: they believe that he is seeking pity and has gone insane.
Page 8: People become very optimistic about the war's progress. They believe that the Soviets will defend them against Hitler and the Nazis. This lulls them into a state of naivete.
Page 9: Anti-Semitic attacks occur, and the Germans invade Hungary. Within three days, the Germans appear on the streets where Elie lives.

Many germans come into the town daily to give work loading coal into the military trains. A couple of weeks later, people were on the street as if nothing was happening, everyone seemed happy.

page 15: Elie is running around town getting people up and letting them know what is happening to them tomorrow. He stops at this one mans house, and is confronted with one mans realization of the horror. Everyone was running around, preparing meals, and preparing themselves for deportation.
page 16: Since Elie's dad is on the Jewish Council, he and his family gets to stay longer. Hungarian and Jewish police evacuated the houses of the ghetto, lining people up in the streets. In the hot sun, the children started crying for water, and since Elie was not leaving, he and his family rushed to help.
page 17: Elie is passed by people he knows. They are all in distress and tears, and since Elie is on the last convoy, he stands on the sidewalk and watches his former friends, teachers, etc, file past him, each looking defeated. When everyone had left, the ghetto looked like an open tomb.
page 18: Elie and his family are one of the last left in the ghetto. They spent the two days they had left packing and getting ready to leave for the smaller ghetto.
page 19: Elie glances at his house down the street, and is reminded of all the memories he had, seeking God, fasting to hasten the coming of the Messiah. During roll call, Elie's father breaks down. This once strong soul is tired and defeated, and cries. The police lash at them with their clubs, yelling at them to move faster.

Elie and his family, like the other Jews are transported to a small ghetto. The people in the ghetto realize that they are eventually going to be sent to a concentration camp. However, to boost their moral and circumvent this reality, the group is remaining optimist. Unfortunately the time comes in which they are being transported like cattle to a concentration camp and that is how chapter one ends.
