The maximum permitted absence from training, other than annual leave, is 20 days (when the doctor would normally be at work) within each 12-month (whole-time equivalent (WTE)) period of the Foundation Programme.
Where a doctor’s absence goes above 20 days, this will trigger a review of whether they need to have an extra period of training.

Placement Supervision Group

Core Teaching Hours

Weekly “Core Teaching Hours” are provided by the postgraduate team for F1s and F2s as part of the foundation curriculum. Additionally, each rotation offers departmental teaching, along with opportunities to attend grand rounds, journal clubs, balint groups, and M&M meetings, which count as “Non-Core Teaching Hours.”

Foundation doctors receive 9 days annual leave per 4-month rotation, with possible additional days for previous NHS service. F1s have no study leave entitlement. F2s can take study leave for ALS and one career-aligned course, plus potential discretionary leave (with funding limits) for presenting at conferences.

Preparing for postgraduate exams (except Prescribing Safety Assessment)

Your portfolio

At the start of your F1 training, you will receive the Horus portfolio to document your training at Medway. Upload SLEs, meetings with supervisors, teaching logs, curriculum mapping, reflections, and summary narratives. You can also record teaching activities in “teaching others.” Keep your portfolio updated for your ARCP.

Changeover Inductions

At the start of each four-month rotation, you will receive a departmental induction tailored to your specialty. This will cover your rota, handovers, equipment training, and simulation. Inductions typically last 1-2 days, depending on the specialty. You are encouraged to speak with colleagues in your new role and visit the department during your self-development time before starting.

A good portfolio

Each Foundation doctor must keep their Horus portfolio updated, aiming for 5-10 SLEs per four-month rotation, including Mini CEX, DOPs, and CBDs. All SLEs must be mapped to the curriculum and the 13 Foundation capabilities:

HLO1: The Clinician – Direct and indirect patient care
HLO2: The Healthcare Worker – Integrating into the healthcare workforce
HLO3: The Professional – Professional requirements and expectations

Foundation doctors should have initial and end-of-placement meetings with their Clinical & Educational Supervisors in rotations one and two. In the final rotation, both an end-of-placement with the CS and an end-of-year report with the ES are required.

Details of the circumstances for doing ER, so it gives information to the ES and GSWH to fully understand the situation.

When entering difference in work time as overtime, please specify the start and finish time of the additional hours you have worked.

Time Limit.

Raise an exception report on allocate within 7 – 14 days of the episode.

Taster Sessions

Many postgraduate centres and foundation schools have a register of tasters. Start by speaking with your ES, FPTD, or local postgraduate admin team and follow local guidance for applying.

Tasters are usually within your base hospital, but may be arranged elsewhere, including different training regions for specialized fields. Be aware that contractual issues may arise in these cases.

To arrange a taster, you’ll need to take leave from your current placement. F1s can often use F2 study leave for this. A reflection must be completed at the end of the taster in your e-portfolio.
