Wonder - a deeper look by Jane SAWREY

1. Why do we often fear what is different?
2. Do you believe August deals with his 'being different' in a positive or negative way? Justify your response with evidence from the novel.
3. The novel is written from different points of view. Why do you believe the author did not write from Julian's perspective?
4. The reader is introduced to Justin, Via's boyfriend. Why do you believe the author stops using capital letters when writing from Justin's point of view?
5. What kind of a person do you believe Justin is? Use evidence from the novel to support your answer.
6. Which character have you connected with the most so far? Why?
7. What are values? Find your own definition for this after conducting some research.
8. Which character from the novel do you believe shares similar values to yourself? Use evidence from the novel to support your answer.
9. Which character from the novel does not share the same values as you do? Use evidence from the novel to support your answer.
10. How does Justin's family differ to Via's family? How could he benefit from being a part of Via's family due to their relationship?
11. The phrase 'the universe was not kind to Auggie Pullman' is repeated in Justin's chapter. What does this mean? Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

1) We're often fear of what is different because they're unusual with the prejudice and concepts that had been established in our mind. They're unexpectable, and unexpectable things might evoke the feeling of unsure when people cannot control their surroundings. Another reason is when we're being different, we stand out, we get judges from other people and don't dare to face the "true" we, we often pretend to be someone else so that we don't be isolated.

2) I think that August deals with his difference in a positive way because he knows his family is always there to support him. If he acts negatively, his family would be sad and disappointed.

3) I think that the author didn't tell the story from Julian's perspective because he's the antagonist of the book.

4) The author stopped using capital letter in Justin' s point of view and the sentences just run on forever, there's no quotation mark before any dialogue. I think the reason for this is because Justin doesn't take his job as a narrator very seriously and Justin is just a teenager, his writing is likely to be influenced by modern texting style when text just run on and on without any full mark or capital letter.

5) I think Justin is a very immature teenager, he treats things that are related to Via very impulsively. An example of this is that he feels very annoyed when Via doesn't tell him about her relationship with Miranda, he wants to be the one who understand Via most.

1. We often fear the different because we are afraid of what might happen later. (e.g. being judged by surroundings or the different might hurt us)
2.I think August deals with his "being different" in positive ways. He can play with his friends and family while ignoring others.
3. The author didn't write from Julian's perspective because we can already see his feeling and behavior through other's perspective.
4. The author stopped using capital letters to show that Justin is a derpy guy.
5. I think Justin is one of those guys who act positive but think negative of others.
6. I think I have connected with August so far. Because author has introduced him the most than anyone else so far.
7. Values are one's judgement of what is important in life.
8. To be honest, I think I share similar value with Julian. I might judge people by their appearance or their difference. I won't go that far like Julian did but I still might judge them.
9. I don't think I share similar value with Summer. She talks to people with difference unlike me who might crawl away and backchat about him or her.
10. Via's family has positive feeling towards their family members. For example, they frequently laugh, say they love each other ext. But Justin's family has negative feeling towards each other. For example, his family divorced when Justin was four and they don't care about his future. The benefits that Justin might gain from being part of Via's family are love and the warmth of family.
11. I think "Universe was not kind to Auggie Pullman" means he was born with disabilities and everything that Auggie face will be tough. Of course that's Justin's perspective (I think?).
I disagree Justin's statement because he got something wonderful that many families doesn't have, including Justin's of course. Family love(?).

1. We might fear what is different because people might judge us, mainly because of other people’s opinions. Not what I am used to.

2. I think that August deals with him being different way In a positive way as he makes jokes about his looks which not only helps him cope with the issue but the people around him.

3. I think that the author didn’t write from Julian’s perspective because we can already see what kind of kid he is by the way others describe him. Even if the author did write from his perspective it wouldn’t be that nice as he would just make august feel bad.

4. I think that the Author writes in an informal way to describe Justin’s outgoing, talented and creative personality. To make Justin look care free.

5. I think that Justin is a nice and kind person, Justin provides his wing when via desperately needs it when she was upset for thinking that she is a bad sister.

6. I think that I have connected with via the most because I know my parents love me and my brother but sometimes I feel like all the attention goes to him because he is older and is in University.

7. A value is something that people follow or is something that is important to someone.

8. I think that me and Via both follow the same values these being, get my school work done, don’t bother anyone, try to solve problems by myself weather it is school work or something else.

9. Julian is defiantly the one I don’t share the same values with. Julian tends to hurt people which I never want to do. Julian also is a bully and likes to get everyone on his side and bully one person. This sort of thing is something I never want to commit.

10. Justin’s family differ from vias family as vias family always says ‘I love you’ and they make sure that each of the family members knows that they love each other. This is something that Justin’s family doesn’t do. He doesn’t know if his loves him or not and doesn’t have a close bond with his family like vias family does.

11. I agree with this statement but also disagree. Sure Auggie has a facial deformity but he is surrounded by love, kindness and has things that some kids could only dream off.

1. We often fear what is different because people will scared at others judge them.
2. I think August deals his being different in a positive way, because he has his family, his friends Summer and Jack always support him and help him. Sometimes August just ignore something bad that from others.
3. The author didn't write from Julian's perspective because Julian stands opposite the August, and we can know his feelings from others point of view, his speech and behaviors. I think the purpose of this book is to show readers how August feels, how his family feel. But readers can know Julian feels bad about August all the time.
4. Because it is written in the way that Justin himself would write it.
5. I think Justin is positive, because he tells Julian and others don't mess with Jack.
6. I think I have connected with the most character is August. Because he actual is protagonist of this story, and almost all of the plots happened to him. Sometimes I can understand some of his feels, and his emotions.
7. Personal values are the general expression of what is most important for you.
8. Summer. Because I think I would like to choose friendly to others whatever they look like.
9. Julian. Because he is rude and not friendly to someone he doesn't like, such as August.
10. Justin's parents were divorced when he was four years old, I think he probably feels warm and sweet from Via's family. Because in the text, he tells us his family never talk like Via's family, and they never ask or talk something about his life.
11. I don't agree this statement because we can know that Justin acknowledges that universe has been unkind to August in many ways, such as his appearance. But it has truly blessed August is his family loves him, this also the most important thing for Justin because he doesn't have.

1. Different mindset makes us fear what we do often because we all have different mindsets and ideas. People usually don't speak up when they have an idea because they're scared that they could take it the wrong way and criticize how they think.
2. I strongly agree that August is dealing with his 'being different' in a positive way because he's not physically showing his anger towards anyone, he's keeping his anger inside him and not expressing it as it may trigger others to keep on bullying him. In story, Summer was being kind to August because she doesn't like it when someone criticize how one looks, she likes to be friends with August because he is fun on the inside. Jack also supports August which tells us that no matter how he looks, August is still a kind person.
3. I think that the author didn't write from Julian's POV because Julian is a character that pokes and disturb other people.
4. I think the author stops using capital letters because it shows that Justin is writing it, however it is also telling us that Justin may be uneducated (as the story describes him).
5. I think Justin is one of those guys who would hang out with a gang and look gangster-ish. I think Justin's personality is positively mature because he tried to be mature about August's face when he first saw him.
6. I think I have connected with August because he I've been through his situation before but not on the face. He's the character that I feel most sorry for because the author used emotional words that affects me.
7. Values is something that is very important or follow.
8. I think that I share similar values to Jack because I am always chill and does not know what others are on about when I say something, I don't take notes to others reaction.
9. Julian doesn't share the same values as me because I am a innocent child and would never take things to where others would judge me.
10. Justin didn't receive as much love as via's family because Justin's parent divorced when he was little. On the other hand, Via's family share the love equally.
11. I don't think I can agree or disagree to this statement because not everyone in the universe was being unkind to August. I think that the quote that was in Justin's Chapter " the universe was not kind to Auggie Pullman" means that August's life would be a disaster because of how he looks.

I think I've connected with Via in a way. Since she doesn't really have a lot of people to talk too about her feelings and she feels that her mum doesn't love her as much and doesn't do the same things she does with her compared with August.
7. something or someone that is very important in your life.
8. Summer since she doesn't care what people look like and she stays away from the people that treat other people poorly.
9. Julian since he judges people without even knowing them and treats them terrible.
10. You can see a big difference with Justin's family and Via's family. Justin's family had a divorce when he was four so he hasn't really felt a lot of love from either of them. Compared to Via's family its very warm and loving and they laugh.
11. i disagree because Justin doesn't know what its like for August and what he has to go through everyday but he's very lucky that he has the loving family he has that sticks up for August in many ways which isn't what Justin has in his family.

The author did not write in Julian's perspective of view because he did not want readers to know how Julian is feeling.
4. The author stops using capital letters because he is trying to show how Justin is speaking casually, or informally.
5. Justin is kind of a person who is good at fitting into his surroundings.
6. Justin did not receive a lot of love from his family because his parents were divorced when he was four, while Via is being loved by everyone in her family.
11.

7) Values are the principles/mottos one's established in order to follow to fulfil the meaning of being a human being.

8) I think Via is the character that share the similar values with me. She's very caring and never let her parent knows she's struggle with anything, she always try her best to accomplish a goal before she get any outside help.

9) I think the character that has the opposite values with me is Julian. He emerges to be the bullying who thinks he's always the centre of everybody's attention. Maybe it's not his fault after all, what he thinks or does are just the products of his parents' teaching.

10) Justin's family is different from Via's family because his parents divorced when he was still little. He'd never feel lonely again.

12) I think the statement "The universe is not kind to August Pullman" means that anything that happens to Auggie is bad and unfair. He has had enough, August Pullman has experienced enough pain and injustice a normal person would never go through in their entire life.

13) I'm sort of disagree with that statement because God never takes away something without replacing it with something better. Even though August doesn't have the appearance normal kids do, but he's still normal, and he has his family there to support him. He has a fuller, happier family than Justin and has more star war/technological toys than Jack.
