"Songs of Freedom" will celebrate local artists and the essential spaces that welcome their freedom of expression.  This is a fundrasier to support our musical family and the reopening of a critical cultural space, Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen.

Join us on Juneteenth (June 19) from 12 PM - 10 PM for a day filled with live performances streaming to you virtually from Darryl's Corner Bar and Kitchen.  Don't miss DJ Val Beatz spinning the classics in between sets throughout the day.  The 10-hour line up includes:

With a focus on the history of Soul Food and Soul Music, this year’s Juneteenth Celebration offers a series of engaging, informative, and entertaining programs that examine the connection between food and historical events in the Black community.

Music: It feeds the soul, fuels the body, inspires artists, influences politics, and impacts just about every part of our lives.

For this commemorative event, live streaming from the Portsmouth African Burying Ground, members of the African drumming and dance group Akwaaba Ensemble and Rev. Robert Thompson will honor the ancestors who survived the Middle Passage with traditional songs and dance.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally observed commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. We wish to commemorate this day with joy and resolve as we strive for justice and liberty in the continued fight for equity.

The event, streamed on Facebook and YouTube, will feature:

• The City Talks: Juneteenth Every Day, a panel discussion moderated by Makeeba McCreary, Patti and Jonathan Kraft Chief of Learning and Community Engagement, and featuring artist Rob "Problak" Gibbs, The Boston Globe columnist Adrian Walker, and trillfit CEO Heather White

• Storytime with artist and children's book illustrator Ekua Holmes, who will read "Black Is a Rainbow Color" by Angela Joy

• Art making led by artist and educator Chanel Thervil Artworks and inspired by Roberto Lugo's "Law and Order: The Reincarnation of Frederick Douglass" (2017) from the MFA's collection

• Spotlight Talk with artist Roberto Lugo, moderated by Michelle Millar Fisher, Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts

• Recitations of speeches, poems and song lyrics by participants in the MFA's teen programs

• Performances by Débo Ray and DJ Where's Nasty, curated by BAMS Fest

The typeface for the word "Juneteenth" in our graphic was designed by Tré Seals of Vocal Type Co., who was inspired by historic imagery of protest signs from the 1963 March on Washington to create the letterforms. Seals named the typeface "Bayard," after civil rights leader Bayard Rustin.

This event is mostly virtual with a key difference of participation and performances. The purpose of this event is to one, shed light on what Juneteenth means and is as a Holiday, and to shed light on the racism and police brutality black peoples face everyday.

The light also symbolizes support. Lanterns in windows were used as indicators to help give slaves a safe passage to freedom.
