The protagonist, John, has lost all of his blood relatives and is being raised by his Keeper, Henri. While the two are not blood related, John treats Henri as if they were really son and father and this is revealed when John says, "He is not my father, at least not by blood. But Henri is the only father I have ever known for ten years" (Lore 57). Also, John finds Sarah and Sam, his girlfriend and best friend, respectively, to be part of their family also, since those four are the only people that know John's secret. John had no blood family alive throughout the entire novel, and for the most part, he only had two people that were even from the same planet as him. However, John found family in those propels that did not share blood or DNA with him, like Henri and Sam. When Henri dies, at his funeral John says, "You were my father. I know we always joked about it, but you were the best father I could have asked for" (Lore 437). It causes many problems for some of the characters in the book. Specifically, when the characters go to a house party for Mark James, the house catches on fire. The official report is that, "The house went ablaze due to carelessness that can be attributed to teenage drinking" (Lore 277). By age eighteen, at least 80% have" (nih.gov). Teens are pressured by their peers to take part in illegal underage drinking, but as we know, teens are not able to handle alcohol the same way adults are. That is why the legal drinking age is twenty-one.
