seoyoon remembers very little of her life before the performance troupe. her parents owned a business, but always struggled to make it by. with many outstanding debts, the man whom they owed money to told the couple that their young daughter could work off the debt in his traveling circus. the girl was barely a toddler at the time and would spend the next 25 years of her life going across joseon, ilbon, and qing with the man she knew as jin.

her earliest memories are long days practicing, and failing, to tap into some wonderous talent. jin often grew impatient with the girl's mistakes and began to punish her when she was 10. sometimes she wouldn't be allowed to eat for a day. other times she would be slapped. on one occasion, jin told her to stand as a target for the acrobat practicing shooting arrows with his foot. the acrobat objected to this, much to jin's anger. and yet, the girl still could not find her talent. she was not graceful nor very flexible. she wasn't brave and she wasn't strong. as she was helping pack the tent supplies, she was singing to herself. her soft and beautiful voice caught the attention of jin and he knew he had found a star.

for years, she would perform under the name kanalia, for a songbird that jin learned about from a foreigner. she wowed audiences with her vocal ability, sometimes performing a trick where she could break a glass with hitting the perfect note. the first time she performed the trick, she broken glass pieces ended up cutting her arm. during this time, life didn't feel as dark. the other performers had become family to her. she even fell in love with a fellow performer, yulhee. the two women would run off from the camp in the middle of the night and sit together under the stars, dreaming about what their lives would be like if they ran away. a year after their first kiss, yulhee would gift kanalia two things; a small jar filled with tiny gems and herbs that was sealed with a cork and looped around string, and one of her throwing knives. "this jar is my wish that we will spend forever together and this knife... is to keep yourself safe. if he lays a hand on you again, use it."

as they were back in joseon and touring, kanalia went to jin's tent to confront him. she was going to tell him it had been 25 years of working for him, her family's debt must've been repaid. but what she saw was his body lying on the ground, a pool of blood surrounding him. shocked and afraid, she ran out of the tent to find that several other tents were set on fire. she could not see the arsonists as their faces were concealed and they ran off into the woods before she could stop them. the young woman ran to search for yulhee and found her trapped under a burning wooden beam that had broken off of a cart. kanalia could barely see through the smoke, but she grabbed onto the woman's hand and tried to pull as hard as she could. she tried to push the beam off, but the fire was spreading too fast. "it's your chance, my bird. fly away," yulhee whispered before closing her eyes for the last time. kanalia knelt, tears running down her cheeks as the fires raged on around her. she didn't want to leave, she wanted to burn with her love.
