First, Hassan had a better relationship with his father than Amir did with Baba, in the story we can see Amir wishes sometimes he had a better father, like Hassan. We can see this when Amir and Hassan hear gunshots. Hassan gets scared and Ali comforts him. Amir narrating then says ^{"Later, I would tell myself I hadn't felt envious of Hassan. Not at all. (pg.35.)"} 

Amir was also jealous of Hassan of receiving the same attention from Baba as he was. We can see this when they are at the kite store and Amir says he wants a better kite, Baba buys it for him but also buys it for Hassan. Amir while narrating then says "Sometimes I wished he wouldn't do that. This is because Hassan is a Hazara (a servant) and Amir is a Pashtun. Something really sad is the way Hassan is extremely loyal to Amir, however Amir isn't loyal to him at all and takes advantage of his power. In chapter 6 Hassan said that if Amir asked him to eat dirt he would. At the end of ch.6, Hassan tells Amir; "you know...I LIKE where I live." He was always doing that, reading my mind. "It's my home." (pg.58)

This shows both perspectives, the way the Hassan can practically read Amir's mind because he devotes his life and friendship only to him. But also the way the Amir does not consider Hassan's feelings towards his home.

This is of course due to the relationship being between a majority and a minority. How one literally serves the other, but the emotional weight that Hassan is unable to unload must be massive, not just from the event of chapter 7, they were friends, but that term vanishes in an instant when Amir is confronted by anyone. He is the only one that can dictate their relationship.
