  • Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale Mississippi

  • He was born as the fourth child and the son of Charles Cooke and Annie May Cooke.

  • Sam started singing at an early age in church. Everyone made note and noticed how well he could sing, even at an early age.

  • Sam released his first son "you send me" in 1957, and it quickly made its way to the top of the charts.

  • Sam then released his first full albumn in 1958

  • Unfortunately Sam Cooke passed away on December 11, 1964. He was aledgly shot in the motel he was staying in.

  • This son was released July 26 1960. Like a lot of Sam Cooke songs reaching number two on both the billboard hot 100 and the hot R&B side charts.

  • Sam Cooke got the inspiration to write this song after seeing a group of prisoners working on the side of the road while he was on tour.

  • It was recorded at the RCA Victor in New York City. While the live version was recorded at the Harlem Square Club in Miami Flordia.

His goal in writing this song was to bring awareness to the harsh work and work enviroment these prisoners have. While also in a way honoring their work as well since the work was so rough that they had to do. Some people also view this song as a reflection of the struggles faced by marginalized communities, drawing parallels between the prisioners labor and the ongoing exploitation of workers in the South.

I think it is fine to feel sorry for the harsh work that priosoners have to go through while they are incarcerated, but in my opinion it is more than fine for them to go through the things they do. We have to remember prisoners land in prison for a reason and most of the time it is because they did something wrong in order for them to get arrested. So I think it is reasonable for them to labor for the county and work their time away rather than sitting in their cell wasting their time away. But back in the day I do feel like some of the things were a little harsh and they may have been a little to hard at times.
