How did the presence of youth children help make or suggest a difference in Chicago's schooling system?

While it is important to note that while the Chicago school system is not all fixed with the development of VOYCE, the desire and demand for change has been heard. The main focus of this piece is the creation of the VOYCE group. VOYCE is the Voice of Youth in Chicago Education. The group was created by students within the Chicago school system who are victimized by school discipline—most of the students being black and brown. VOYCE cowrote the legislation, mobilized their peers to demonstrate support for the act, built a diverse alliance including parent organizing and advocacy groups, and led the lobbying effort to pass the bill, traveling on a weekly basis to the state capitol almost four hours away to tell their stories and press legislators to pass the bill (152).

Why do people still send their children to these poor public schools? When they know it is not setting them up to do good life? Yes, public schools teach us reading and writing, and math, but other than that, what else does it teach us? How to become a prisoner? How do you get used to not stating your opinion? How do you get used to walking in a straight line and being told what to do all day? ISS (in-school suspension) is literally a prison cell, and I know plenty about ISS. You are stuck in a little classroom with one adult and, if you are lucky, with a couple of kids, but if you are not so fortunate, you are the only one in there and are stuck in there for eight hours in silence doing schoolwork you missed. If your teachers did not send you work, the day is even longer. I've been to ISS plenty of times within a bunch of different schools and the only difference between them is the adults watching us in them; your whole experience depended on who the adult was watching you, meaning if the adult has a crappy attitude, then those next eight hours are going to be helll.
