The dominant culture in a society is the most visible; we see evidence of them everywhere and they have a lot of influence on people in society.

It is the culture ‘whose values, language and ways of behaving are imposed on a subordinate culture or cultures through economic or political power’ (Scott 2014).

Minority groups are generally less visible groups, or groups which may be singled out based on aspects of their culture (language, beliefs, values and norms); often people don’t pay them as much attention and are less influenced by them.

These groups are marked as ‘different’ (compared to the dominant culture).

Subcultures are smaller groups, which have their own identities and can be defined by observable, distinct norms, values, beliefs and symbols and are generally tolerated by the dominant culture.

These groups develop ‘a world within the larger world of the dominant culture’ (Henslin 2014, p. 51).

In any given society, or nation, there are dominant cultures, minority cultures, and subcultures.

These cultures are so formed because of the way a society or a nation might choose to define itself against who belongs and who does not—or who has power and who remains in the margins.
