"Man is his own star; and the soul that can

Render an honest and a perfect man,

Commands all light, all influence, all fate..." (he becomes self-aware, being rendered honest and is wholly influenced by his future and new beliefs)
"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance..." (envy of others having books or knowledge he does not understand is proof of his ignorance, which he learns to change)
"...that imitation is suicide..." (imitating his fellow firemen by burning people and books is killing himself mentally, he decides to change and break free from imitation)
"...that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion..." (he must make his own decisions and to his own actions, for he must face the new rewards and hardships they result)

"The power which resides in him is new in nature, and

none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried..."

Vincent Van Gogh greatly contributed to the artistic world, not only painting many incredibly famous works, but he also invented and developed many techniques that are still essential or celebrated today. He was gravely misunderstood as he suffered from a form of epilepsy that gave him tinnitus and hallucinations, making others perceive him as insane, eventually leading to his suicide.

"It doesn't matter if you love him or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up
'Cause you were born this way, baby" is parallel to "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine Providence has found

for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events."
These are especially connected as they both reference a reliance or lack thereof on God that is evident in every human being from birth, impacting their very being, where one must accept who they are and what they believe in and must freely embrace it regardless of the confines of society around them.

Chris McCandless wholly embodied the concept of self-reliance. He had a conviction to not imitate the norms of society, to instead go out into the wild unknown to make something of himself. He knew he could get things from working in the world, evident from him working a job to get money, but found that self-satisfaction would be best fulfilled by committing to himself and relying on his own hard work out on his adventures, to the point where he would feel wrong gathering help from others or 'cheating'. He was so self-reliant, in fact, that he would disallow any exterior assistance unless absolutely necessary for a situation, wholly at the mercy of his own strengths and belief in himself. He was certainly a nonconformist, as he was behaviorally unique to those around him, breaking away from what was expected to go off on his own into danger.
