In 2013, there were 508 000 tourists, they are attracted by the island's strong culture and beautiful beaches. Barbados traditions are drawn from the Weast African and British cultures that shaped the island. The majority of the population is of African descent however the island was a colony of the British Empire so the English influence is very strong. 
  The tum bands are very popular there. It's a very special music, a blend of African music, with its heavy drum influence, and British folk music.
  The Landship Movement is a signifiant element of Barbadian culture as it was one of the methods through which slaves were able to protect certain aspects of their heritage under the camouflage of acceptable European institutions and customs. Now it's more of a "theatrical group", and the movement is not as strong as it once was, but its presence at local festivals still generates much excitement and interest. 
  Pottery has an important role in Caribbean heritage and culture, it has always been a vital skill for inhabitants of Barbados. 
  Barbados has a strong cricketing tradition dating back to the 1800s when the game was played by British soldiers stationed on the island and by the plantation owners and members of the aristocracy. The sport of road tennis was invented in Barbados in the 1930s, and dominos, kite flying and pitching marbles are very popular there ! 
  They have lots of important annual festivals too, like Holytown festival or Crop Over.
  "Cou-cou" and flying fish is the national dish of Barbados. Cou-cou is similar to polenta but it's more creamy, it's made from corn meal and oknas. Other favourites are macaroni pie, fish cakes and cutters of all sorts !
  Christmas is an important religious and social holiday for Barbadians and is mostly spent with family. Favourites Christmas dishes are backed ham, jug-jug (made from pigeon peas, salted beef and Guinea corn flour) and rich cake (made with a variety of fruits, spices and rum).
  The architectural tradition of Barbados also reflects African and British influences. European styles were adapted for the Caribbean climate with the use of large and open veranda and gable roofs.
  There were cattle houses for the working class when Barbados was still a British colony. A chattel house is a Barbadian word for a small and movable house that working class people would occupy. Some of these wooden houses have been meticulously preserved and maintained, so you can see them. You can see the Hunte's Gardens (an old plantation), the Carlisle or the Bottom Bay, and a lot of parks, tours and excursions too !
