I think the first thing that comes to mind is how accessible it will be with the digital innovation, with tools like procreate and other design apps, everyone who has access to a tablet or an iPad will be able to practice calligraphy, this will make it even less of a high maintenance hobby or activity. However, it stripes away the aesthetics of it being handwritten.

Haya Al Kubaisi

In my opinion, digital innovation has made Arabic calligraphy more accessible and widespread, since artists can now create on tablets and share their work instantly online. It also allows for new creative styles in logos, media, and design. However, I feel that while technology brings convenience, it can also reduce the sense of authenticity and personal connection that traditional hand-drawn calligraphy carries.

Where once Calligraphy was done on paper, it is now done using technology such as iPads. These developments make it easier to master the skill and access the pen styles (for example, using the app Procreate, which provides a range of pen tips). Although this is great, it removes the traditional and handmade feel of the writing. The authenticity and spiritual aspect of calligraphy is, in a sense, diminishing with the technological advancements that do not require the in-depth culture of the writing, as it is simplified with the help of technology. Nonetheless, it does make it easier for people to begin learning about calligraphy and mass-producing it.

Maeda Al-Haidar

Digital innovation has made Arabic calligraphy accessible to worldwide audiences through social media, digital fonts, and design software, allowing it to appear in everything from online education to global branding. Yet this shift has slowly reduced its authenticity, as digital calligraphy often lacks the spiritual depth and tactile imperfections of handmade work, with fonts in logos and media replacing the individuality of a calligrapher’s hand.

Group 1 - Sara, Noora and Lujain

Digital innovation has impacted the current tools and materials used for Arabic calligraphy in many ways through the integration of digital tools and software. Other than the obvious use of online platforms and generative AI tools, I also believe that applications are also considered tools that are impactful because they allow learners to practice Arabic calligraphy interactively and get feedback. The use of new apps cause us to easily learn through Ipads and pencils how to create calligraphy digitally without the need to use pens or handwrite it.Another key impact is preservation as with digital technology it is easier to save the work through creating online libraries and manuscripts so it enables sharing calligraphy artworks across the world.

Group 5

We all agreed about how more accessible it can be with the rise in digital innovation. It will allow for further preservation as more people will be able to try it and spread the art and history of calligraphy. However, the quality and aesthetics of it will be oversimplifies and reduced which will weaken the whole traditional aspect of calligraphy.
