Experience - many instances where I can't teach teach everything to my students, were being taught by my students

To humanising teaching and learning process focus on educational experience and be able to express themselves.

Our experience

Students are found to be less interactive in class, they did not share their thoughts and only answer question when asked.

We can make the world a better place when

Providing real-life examples, students can better grasp the values and distinguish between what is good and what is not. This approach helps students become better decision-makers and enhances their chances of success in life.

Our concerns

Our concern is students are not speaking up. The students are too dependent on AI tools.

Our current practice in dealing with my concerns

We ask student to answer the questions and always communicate their concerns. When students submit their works, lecturers ask to provide more evidence to support their writing.

How have we contradicted our values/beliefs?

We try to speak less in the class and give opportunities to students to voice out their opinion. However, it took a while to get the students to respond that forced me to say something in the end.

We imagine a way forward

We believe that students should be able to think and express their opinion.

Instead of individual works, we ask the students to work and discuss in a small group before they response in a bigger setting.

We try to match with the CLO by looking at the responses and how they response.

Based on Gibbs Reflective Cycle, we can measure the understanding of the students' responses in terms of confidence level, etc. We can systematically address student confidence issues by analysing the situation, understanding feelings, evaluating what worked and and what didn't, drawing conclusions and creating plan for improvement.

A bit about ourself

Our group consists of Juhaida, Zarifah and Raudah, from Tissa and SOC.

Our area of expertise are in management accounting, accounting informations systems and computing.

We taught students on how to use accounting information to make decision, and make enabler between users and systems.

Based on Kitab Ihya following al-Ghazali's thought.

What experience provides me with these insights?

Seeking the learn from the hearts/soul so that it will be embedded through one's belief and good values of oneself / inculcate the good sources of self (Taylor, 1989)

Action:

Undertaking reflection/ muhasabah through the PAUSE framework:

E - Empower - create some sort of actions from the muhasabah

MY CONCERNS:

Students morality imperatives to be able to cope with the life as this is very important in attaining/following the philosophy in life.

Try to engage the students from hearts/soul

WAY FORWARD:

1. My values and philosophical stances embedded from the al-Ghazali's thought from Kitab Ihya.

2. Values from here, need to be embedded in teaching though PLO11 Professional Ethics / CLO5 for Specialised Accounting Subject

3. Doing action teaching through AURA framework that is through Assessing, Understanding, Reflection and Actions.

4. Following al-Ghazali's, Taylor (1989) and Mezirow (2019)

Our value is to make sure that the session we teach is interactive.

Our experience from various students shows that some cannot secure good job even good grades because of lacking of soft skills, such as communication, leadership and others.

MY CONCERN: i am very concerned about my family, career and students. thus I will be dealing with all my colleagues and students with love and patient.

MY PERSONALITY: i have a high sense of urgency and sense of humor. i love to process something and wait for the output with smile ;)

MY EDUCATIONAL GOALS: Be an inspiring lecturer

CONTRADICTION : I want to do some other my task at home, but it is too difficult for me. I just enjoying my life as a housewife at home and mom of 5 kids. But i believe, I will fill do my task by hook or by crook at my office.

Beliefs- we need to believe in ourself and equipped ourself with necessary knowledge, skills, positive attitude and always keep myself motivated.

Experience- we are too focusing on the KPI and overlook about the good values we need to teach the students eg; empathy

My Action:

Through my teaching and learning, I can make the world a better place when guide and explain the meaning of life, develop suitable teaching strategies, used humanistic approach and facilitate students with meaningful feedback.

My Concerns:

Student's attitude, time-constraints to build a good relationship with students. I feel frustrated.

My Current Practice:

Advise one to one, sharing session related to personal experience and engagement activities with the students to build trust.

Some of the students have changed the attitude but due to time constraints, we are unable to monitor them continuously.

We aim to become a very positive person but at the end of the day we become frustrated and judgemental when we faced the same problem from the same students.

What is my concern? What evidence? How do I feel about it? : My major concern during lectures, the student should not sleep and focus on lectures. Yes, when students are sleeping I feel bad.

I am engaging students through innovative teaching methodologies such as storytelling and motivation sessions as well as introducing refresher exercise during lectures.
