Laura Zeidenstein has lived in her Brooklyn neighborhood for 40 years. She is now 65 years old and recently retired from her professional life as a midwife and educator. Six weeks into retirement she was sheltering in place in the heart of the pandemic. Laura maintained daily painting practice as a way to balance the agony and horrors of COVID-19, imbedded racist violence, and separation from family and friends. Laura has painted throughout her lifetime and for the last 20 years she has focused on watercolors. In the summer of 2019 she leaped into plein-air oil painting under the instruction of Elizabeth O’Reilly. “All of these paintings were done in my home. Sometimes I cried while I painted or painted through extreme fear and anxiety.” Laura’s love of spontaneous color and the comfort that she feels for her Brooklyn surroundings are reflected in these new works.
