Just like when we are caring for patients, we also need to build trust and rapport with the nurses we are working alongside. To create a good working relationship, we need to be relatable, approachable and be opportunistic with our teaching.

In my current workplace nurses have many skills such as NG insertion, CVAD management but they struggle to apply critical thinking to these tasks.
Some of the key ideas I had for building this foundation are;
1. Workplace Values

2. Culture of learning

3. Alignment of management and educators

4. The learner’s need’s

5. The learners learning style – Get staff to tell us how
they learn best
6. Educating the learner about learning opportunities and
the different ways in which they present themselves in
the workplace. Education awareness is important.

6. Financial support and resources

7. The organisation of the workplace

8. Mentoring

9. Role modelling

10. CF support

11. Promoting questioning to develop critical thinking which
is the core of everything that nurses do.
12. This creates a platform from which we can add formal
skills that nurses use in their daily practice.

It is very tempting to get on with your personal workload. Being sure to support new starters and encourage them to join in and develop camaraderie will help with open and honest reflection.
