Meaning: The director’s main purpose in the film is to criticise today’s culture. Depicted in a dystopian future where idiocy has become the norm, the director reflects on today’s culture, criticising the shallow and meaningless entertainment, consumerism, lack of care about the environment, among other topics such as politics, business and medical care. But it also encourages the common viewer to improve, study, read books, be interested in important matters, and not become like the people from that future. This is shown in a line where Joe says “I think maybe the world got like this because of people like me”. He was an average person. The movie encourages the viewer to overcome his own barriers and be better.

Value: Idiocracy is an interesting unrepentant satire that not only shows the depiction of society but also the devolution of culture through time, where corporations have consumed people’s life, the language is reduced into hilarious patois of hillbilly, ebonics and slang, and political meetings are just another entertainment show on TV. Critics and sociologists affirm that originally was a comedy, but it turned into a documentary, because some examples of cultural decay given in the film are a little too close to genuine reality. It’s fair to say that what makes this movie so funny (and scary) is that we can imagine living in a world like this. In conclusion, we have to change this attitude and start thinking that, as a society, we have to do everything we can to avoid a future like this. We can do it, but we must start now.

Joe is a soldier who works in the army as a military librarian. The U.S. army volunteers him for a suspended animation experiment, along with a hooker named Rita. The experiment is supposed to run for only a year, but they wind up forgotten for five hundred years. When they finally emerge, society has become very dumb. Joe is now the smartest person in the country and the world’s looking at hi to solve some problems. 

The author is mainly interested in the different themes developed in the movie.

The main character represents the average lazy American: none-too-bright and vastly uneducated. As regards to his physical appearance, Joe Bauers is a well-built and medium-height man. He has short dark hair and looks like a man in his late thirties. He has pale complexion and dark eyes as well.

As regards to his personality, he seems friendly, optimistic and self-confident.

At the beginning of the film, the character belongs to a middle social class and works as a United States Army librarian. However, by the end of the movie he becomes the president of the United States belonging to the high society. 

- The author uses the plot to reveal the character.

- The society’s IQ is used to emphasize Joe’s intelligence.

- The pass of time is also important in this movie due to the fact that Joe wasn’t exposed to social changes in the country because of being involved in a military human hibernation project.

Although the story provides evidence of more than one problems, there is a central topic: the involution in human race. It is shown in different situations such as social organizations and institutions in decadence, the absence of systems of law and the government administration which is being controlled by unable people who are disrespectful and rude.

Society has declined in moral standards and rules for behavior. This setback is also showed in human intelligence which has moved back people who are not able to solve any kind of problem or even to recognize geometrical shapes. This deep meaning is explicit, since it is not only showed in actions but also commented during the development of the film. 

When Rita reunites with Joe after 500 years that the experiment took place, she does not want to help him because the police is following him and does not want to get in trouble.

Later on, they develop a friendship and became closer to each other, so she decides to help him to solve the nation’s problems, such as with the growth of the crops.

When the plan succeeded and Joe decides to go back in time with the help of the time machine (that later on they discover it isn’t in fact a time machine), Rita says that she is going to stay because she wants to get away from her past. Afterwards Joe convinces her to stay in the future. 

Some years later Joe and Rita make a family and they are the most intelligent people in the United States.

Rita is a major character in the story, real, true to life. Besides, she is a round character because she is well developed and her thoughts and feelings are described. Also, she is a dynamic character, because she has an important change in the course of the story, for example, when she helps to demonstrate that plants have grown with water while Joe is fighting for his life, or when she shares and supports Joe’s ideas.

They both get put on special hibernation chambers, but things take a turn when the base is closed and the project gets cancelled, along with the chambers with Joe and Rita inside of them.

500 years pass, it is 2505 Joe and Rita's suspension chambers are unearthed by the collapse of a mountain-sized garbage pile, and Joe's suspension chamber crashes into the apartment of a man called Frito. The human population has become stupid, speaks only low registers of English competently and individuals are named after corporate products, Joe enters a hospital, where he is incompetently diagnosed, and start to realize what has happened to him and to society. He is arrested for not having a bar code tattoo and he is sent to prison.

After that Joe is named "Not Sure" by a tattooing machine, and takes an IQ test before tricking the guards into letting him escape. Once free, Joe asks Frito about a time machine to return him to 2005. Frito say that he knows one and takes Joe and Rita to a gigantic Costco store, where the protagonist is identified by a tattoo scanner. He is apprehended again, but this time he is taken to the White House, where he is recognized as the most intelligent person alive. Joe discovers that the nation's crops are irrigated with a sports drink named "Brawndo" and he decides to replace this liquid for water but this produces that the most important part of the population lose their jobs. Joe is sentenced to die in a monster truck demolition.

Frito and Rita discover that the replacement of the sport drink Brawndo was effective and they show the sprouting crops on the stadium's screen. The president asks Joe’s forgiveness.

Finally Joe is elected President and gets married with Rita. They have the world's three smartest children, while Vice President Frito has 32 of the world's stupidest children.

 

-He is the lawyer of Joe, but instead of defends him, he accuses Joe of breaking his apartament and being an inept (although the inept is Frito). 

-Example of massive consumerism and capitalism.

-The author is more interested in the situation than in characters because with it, he wants to prove what is happening and that we are not  far away from the reality that is shown in the movie.

-He is a major character because helps to protect Joe and Rita and to look for “The time machine” (even it is just a game) but then he helps people to realize what Joe had proposed with the water and crops worked, and Frito made it by transmitting with a camera to the stadio where rehabilitations where made. Even though Frito isn’t intelligent, he could help in some way, showing that with help of everyone, things can be fixed. 

-Frito is a real character because he shows how society involuted through the years, as a consequence of consumerism, TV shows and lack of education. We can say that it is possible that the situation shown by the movie is going to happen. 

-He is a flat character because he is not well described. 

-He is well-economically, but the nation is bankrupt as a result of the crops that don’t grow. We can say that he is inept, stupid, lazy, and he doesn’t know anything apart from TV programs. He is a lawyer but he doesn’t know anything about laws. He is medium size, he has got light-blue eyes and brown hair. His way of moving shows his laziness and he has a “stupid face” all the time.

The dialogues between the actors are casual and very informal. The characters in the movie use their own slang (a very informal language that is usually spoken rather than written, used especially by particular groups of people). This is intentionally used in the movie to emphasize the topic of the film.

The purpose of these dialogues is to reveal, to show that the majority of the characters possess a very low level of education.

The use of irony is present all the time in the film, it help to highlight the contrast between the past and the present.

There is a  use of low comedy because it amuses directly.

In the film there are a lot of pathetic passages because this is the intention of the movie.
