Take Away

My biggest take away from the resources is that self care is my ethical responsibility as a school counselor (Williams, 2011). Self care can often feel selfish and a waste of time, but knowing that I am required to do it takes away those feelings. Taking care of myself is part of my job and that helps me actually do it with more fidelity.

Self care in the helping profession is extremely crucial to avoiding burn out and overall effectiveness. When I do not talk care of myself and my needs, I cannot effectively help someone else do the same. Like the old saying goes: "you can't pour from an empty cup".

Self care for me involves separating work and home. One of the ways I do this to make sure I leave work at contract time at least twice a week. The work will still be there whether I leave at 3:15 or 5. Additionally, I try to go on a walk with my dog everyday. This little bit of exercise really helps me clear my head.
