My oral language skills were always good. My mom read to me when she was pregnant with me. I think this had an impact on my oral skills later on in life. My first word was "dada". I was never shy when it came to reading.

Beginning Reader and Writer

I was so excited to start elementary school. My mom would always bring home new books for me to read. Every book would increase a level. This helped me become a more advanced reader and writer in elementary classes. My teachers were always so impressed with the skills I knew. They even considered me skipping second grade and going straight to third. My mom wanted me to learn everything and she didn't want me to miss out on anything. I ended up staying in my right grade.

When I entered third grade, my teacher realized that some of the books we were reading were not advancing me. He gathered a book series for me called A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I absolutely loved this series. I read each of the books out of the series before the beginning of the next year. After reading each book, my teacher would have me write the main idea of the book and cite details that supported it. I also like Junie B. Jones books but they became boring and too easy for me after a while.

One of my favorite books when I was little is What Teachers Can't Do by Douglas Wood. This book had many pictures for me to see. I also was engaged with this book because it related to school. I was excited to start school and grow as a reader and writer!

I enjoyed writing about stories we would read in class. One of those stories was If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff. My teachers could not believe the amount of details I would use at such a young age. They would always use me as an example and ask for me to read what I wrote to the class. This made me more confident in my reading and writing. I also loved helping others with their reading and writing in class. My teacher would place us in small groups so we could brainstorm and share our ideas collectively.

I do believe there is some improvement and growth that can be made within my writing. I hope to learn more from this class. I love helping my fourth graders with their writing and making it more robust. I ask them in depth questions to make them think beyond the question. This helps them add more details to their text and get a better understanding of what is being asked of them.
